According to the Irish Mirror, UTV Ireland got 73,000 viewers for its opening night doc 'Out with the Old, In with the U' between 8.30 and 9.30 last night.

Is that good or bad?

Haven't seen any recent figures but in the fairly recent past, the number 1 rated programme in Ireland would typically pull in c. 650k - 700k viewers. That would be on RTE One. A good turnout for an RTE 2 show would be c. 200k viewers. So, 73k for the first night of a completely new station isn't too bad.

Top rated show on New Year's Day was RTE 9 o'clock News with 572k. TV3 pulled in 250k with movie Mission Impossible up against the first half hour of In with the U. Emmerdale got 182k between 7.30 and 8.30 for UTV.

I guess the soap figures compared to what they got on TV3 would be the best indicator. In theory is UTV Ireland available to everyone who has TV3?

I do think TV3 should have been a bit more agressive in taking on UTV. No doubt about it they're taking a huge hit but they probably should have got Red Rock (their new soap) on the air last night rather than leaving it till next week

UTV Ireland is on Saorview, aswell as Sky and UPC, so in that case it should be available to all.

I'd be massively disappointed If I was them - given the amount of promotion cash they've thrown at the launch, and the hype around the launch as well. They would probably have been hoping for an audience of double that at least - seems like their tag line unmissable was a little misplaced !

Wonder how the Emmerdale figure compares to what the old UTV Belfast feed used to get in The South.

The thing that I think will make or break it with the Irish viewers is the news service - again am amazed that there was no news input to the launch night or first full day's schedule when, given the time of year, there is a massive potential audience.

UTV is available to pretty much anyone who has TV3 Yep - am amazed that TV3 didn't schedule more aggressively against them as well - also think that there needs to be more creativity in UTV Ireland's scheduling strategy as well for viewers to get it !

RTE 1 took the top 7 slots on New Year's Day, with TV3 at 8 and 9, and UTV Ireland coming in at 10 with Emmerdale

Basic fonts, basic presentation, I'm not surprised. UTV and UTVI are both awful presentation wise. They need an overhaul. This isn't the 80's. Lens flare is not cutting edge graphically!

UTV's logo is just horrible, just reminds me of this!

It truly is rather stale isn't it? There's no imagination in their marketing/branding department. I wish they would follow STV's lead and get a total relaunch from an external agency. They totally went OTT with the green.

Anybody else having problems with the UTV Ireland Player? It won't go past the first ad at the start.
