The desk does look a little snug. And the lighting is awful. That needs fixing quickly.

What I don't get is why they didn't get a studio set up like Granada? If they have a quayside location, what was stopping them from utilising the view?

It does look so much better, mainly for the opportunity of wide shots and no needs for those ugly black panels.

That report with Paul and Rose together just confirms that the programme does not need to be presented by two newsreaders, one of more than sufficient. They also look too squashed behind that desk.

I'm still baffled at those black bars. Who thought that would look good? if they were any other colour but black it would be an improvement.

I'm tempted to say yes.

It really wouldn't cost much if that's the issue. Excuse the crude mock but what if they fitted roller blinds to the top of the windows and rolled them to cover the black bit, as if they're half open, then a board across the bottom and forget that part of the window ever existed.

I mean, ideally use a video screen which meets the purpose of the bloody set design but if they need to botch it, there are ways.

Surely just an led light strip and replace the black panels with metal or grey to show a coloured light. But that desk, how horrible. At least the national desk looks nice, this just looks like a big awkard box, and the whole set in general looks miserable.

This is what happens when the corporate look takes over, creativity gets stiffled and everything becomes bland.

The previous set was nothing to shout about either. Looked like a uni production.

The poor picture quality didn’t help either.

I'm glad it wasn't just me who thought the desk was too small for 2 of them. I don't think it'll be long before it's just one person on the 6 o clock shift. Paul actually said recently on a live bulletin with Rose beside him when the nice weather started that he still has work to do and Rose can go home earlier and she was a bit defensive and said I'll be here a little while longer. But in all seriousness you don't need 2 of them.

It was a bit awkward I thought but I guess it was a bit of banter xD

It's so cheesy when they glance over at one another when they read a line. Mike and Linda were a married couple and it was much more natural. It's not the same since they left.

If fact, I'm watching now and they have 2 laptops on the desk and they are right up to the edge of the table on both sides!

In those areas that usually have sub-regionalised news, whenever there are ad-hoc forays into pan-regionalism for all/part of a bulletin we get the CGI "gallery" backdrop.

This further damages any believability that the "windows" might otherwise have. Last time I checked, real actual windows can't magically change at will between overlooking an outdoor view and an indoor one.

It'd be better if the generic pan-regional backdrop was a static image that looked like e.g. an ITV News-branded rollerblind (or Venetian blinds, complete with cord etc), which would work with - not against - the logic of the desired "window" illusion.

I'm kind of glad I live in Granadaland and don't have those nasty black strips around the top or the bottom of the set, I do think ours is the best Itv regional set.
