Julian's mother died on Christmas Eve, therefore a lot of credit to him for working on Christmas Day which must have been a difficult time for him.

Oh dear God, I never realised about Julian's mother, what a horrible blow to anyone regardless of what you think of them, especially at this time of year.
It's been quite a surprise to see he has be on screen over the Christmas period. My sympathies go out to him and his family.
EDIT: Robin did a back announcement out of the programme mentioning the bereavement and that it was Julian's wish for the programme to go out... and then the Skybox crashed.

Popular UTV personality Julian Simmons was in mourning today after the death of his mother over Christmas.
The colourful presenter was this morning preparing to make a heart-breaking final farewell at the funeral service of Pearl Simmons.
It is understood she passed away on Christmas Eve after a long illness. She was aged 94 and had been living in a residential home in recent times where Julian visited her every day.
Julian and his mother were well known for their close relationship as he was an only child and his father died when he was just 12-years-old. Two months ago, Julian, famous for his flamboyant introductions to Coronation Street, described Mrs Simmons as a "very sociable person with a great sense of humour".
"Mum was never interested in housework, but she always looked a million dollars when she went out," he told the Belfast Telegraph. " She also has a great sense of humour. I think that's where I get it from.
"She always encouraged me to take part in amateur dramatics and opera, but she was very wary of me going into television - she thought it would be too serious."
The larger-than-life presenter also spoke of the effect his father's death had on his relationship with his mother.
"When I was 12 I found my dad lying dead on the floor. Something like that does bring you closer to your remaining parent, though I think I was always naturally closer to mum anyway.
"What happened was a complete tragedy - mum was a relatively young woman and I was determined that she would still have as good a life as possible. I wanted to do all I could to stand by her."
A number of Julian's UTV colleagues were expected to attend Mrs Simmons' funeral today.

UTV are back to using their normal idents today, however they still have superimposed "You're home" which now changes to "Your home for 2007". I wonder how long these will be used for?
One of them was played out last night by accident just before the New Year's Eve party but was cut off before the "for 2007" line appeared!

The only explanation I have as to why Julian still appears in-vision while the rest of his colleagues don't is that he must have a clause in his UTV contract to ensure that as long as he works for the station, he gets to do in-vision continuity.
And perhaps the other announcers do not have a clause as such in the contract, so they are not required to appear in-vision. I am certain there is nothing stopping them from doing IVC, but they may choose not to - apart from the odd occassion when Robin Taylor pops up.
I know other announcers have had arrangements like these; Bill Steel in his time at Tyne Tees is one I am aware of.
