"UTV boast television-advertising revenues going up by 16% compared to ITV as a whole."
I find that amazing. I wonder if it can be attributed to strong regional identity?
No I wasn't being sarcastic. It really is an astonishing figure.
Sorry, I thought when you were attributing the increase in revenues to a strong regional identity, you were! I don't know the specifics, but I'd go along with what Pickle's suggesting.
I'm curious to know by how much UTV's ratecard has increased in line with other ITV regions. I presume they now market themselves to the advertisers as a station which is watched throughout the island of Ireland rather than in the 1 million or so homes in Northern Ireland: charging rates to match.
The analogue signal from Northern Ireland can certainly get as far south as Dublin, with the aid of boosters... Add in the use of reflectors and cable, UTV can reach about 80% of the Irish Republic.
This web page and associated links might explain the situation in the Republic a little better, though it is a few years out of date!
So what do you reckon the UTV potential total audience reach is on analgoue?
Can I start the guesses?
Purely analogue (ie. not counting cable or deflectors), I would say it is most homes from a line roughly east to west from the Wicklow Mountains to Sligo. So, that alone would be at least as many homes in the RoI as in the place that they are licensed to serve. When you DO count cable, deflectors and other ways to receive it, it is probably potentially twice as many as in NI.
A nice little earner for them, I'm just glad it doesn't dilute the excellent local service they provide for the good people of NI who, after all, wouldn't watch all those ITV1 soaps, dramas entertainment shows if it wasn't for UTV. Hooray for them.

Of course, you could just as easily say that the good people of NI watch UTV *because* of all those ITV1 soaps, dramas and entertainment shows, and the local flavour is just a fringe benefit.
UTV's own income is so small (even allowing for a 16% increase) that is depends entirely on ITV1 to give it something to show other than local news.

Put east Mayo in there also and I know Longford and Roscommon can get analogue ok.
