(July 2001)

I and other members have recently been sent an email virus:

'Hi! How are you?

I send you this file in order to have your advice

See you later. Thanks'

With an attachment - do not open this file. It will send itself to members in your address book and randomly delete files.

See below for how to remove the virus.

May I also take this opportunity to remind users of the forum for the need of good virus protection.

If you don't have a virus program installed on your computer, do us all a favour and protect yourself.
The high end virus programs such as Norton and McAfee do cost money, however, you can download a totally free virus program from the internet, which offers free updates and regularly scores 100% in virus detection rates.

www.grisoft.com is the place to download AVG Anti-Virus System.
It wont take long to download, about 10 mins or so, and installation is simple and quick.
It has an email scanner, updates are totally free, for life, and it has a real time scanner too.
Please, please, please. If you haven't already got a virus program, go and download it now!

Yeah, I got it. Don't think it was from Chesh though. Does it say who it's from at the top or does it generate a name?

I have. I currently have 3 checking my system. No e-mails are coming in or going out. I have shut down the whole of Hedgehog Online because i uploaded some files which could have a virus.

If it does originate from me I am sorry but some Jamacian Hotel seems to be creating the problem and they have had a very nasty e-mail.

Is it using up everyone's memory or is it just picking on me by changing my desktop to green

I would think the hotel is just the one that sent it to you. I got an e-mail from somebody called Natasha who works at an Irish/Scottish hotel chain containing this virus.

I had it,but I have now deleted it. It was on the 6:00 news you know. It sends out a file at random from your Documents folder to everyone in your addres book.

Unfortunaly Alan Britton has it.

Well. If that's the case. everyone who got the clock may have it. My site is already causing problems. My aunties wedding is in jamacia and i thinks it's come from their hotel and their uploading images to my site and sending e-mails to people. my work is never ending.

Don't worry Big Brother... I am fairly sure I didn't get it from you. Did you actually look at the attachment? I understand it shows you whatever file it is but also launches a rather nasty EXE at the same time.

I did have a copy of it on my computer sent from yourself, which is odd, as I didn't expect to be on your address book, due to the fact, AFAIK, you've never sent me an email!

Just do what I do - delete any email which has an attachment!!

No. The e-mail begins with Hi! How are you. It's on the BBC News Site.

Take a look. It's a streamed media piece. So you only have to delete the e-mail with the hi how are you bit.
