Yes, my point was that the job description of the Deputy Director-General has changed depending on the people involved, Birt (and Byford) had specific responsibilities in news and current affairs. At other times, there wasn't a specific Deputy Director-General and sometimes there has been but not specifically connected to news and current affairs. For example, in the early eighties, Gerald Mansell was Deputy Director-General and Managing Director of the World Service.
