It's current set have that interim feel too.
Turns out nobody had 2020 vision.

I've never really understood most of the hate for Rhythm and Movement - other than some of them coming off a bit cheesy. Overall they had strong visual unity, great soundtracks and inclusivity done right. Ballet is one of the most beautiful idents out there.

Same with Windows on the World. Sometimes I felt like people's only real problem with them (other than the overuse of certain ones and the later-stage edits) was that they weren't the classic 2s.

Rhythm and Movement suffered from not being the hot air balloon or a globe.
Write that down in your copybook now.

I love these, simple graphical idents, less tacky than what came before and not deathly dull like what came immediately after.

I prefer graphical idents. I liked this set when I lived in Carlton Central:

Indeed. I think it all depends on your perspective and what you’re comparing them to. Just about everyone (at least on here) seemed to hate them when they replaced the well-loved balloon idents.

No-one seemed to have a good word to say about them until Oneness came along, and now everyone’s looking back at them with fondness.

I adored these.
I loved the fact that they were designed with continuity in mind, something that seems to have disappeared in recent years. The form ups were all different, but all idents had a perfect cue for the announcers and a simple looped filmed of the stars rotating.

I think the Rhythm and Movement set have aged very well. I wasn’t a big fan at the time, but I don’t think they’d look out of place today, and they seem much more modern than the Window on the World set they launched the year after their demise, and even some of the Circle idents (the 2009 cuts probably don’t help them). Looking back, you can admire them differently, such as the use of the Minack as a setting for Ballet.

I really like the C5 idents mentioned above as well. Despite being an interim set of idents, they are probably the ones I associate most with the channel. I’d have to agree with the Carlton star idents as well. I find the Hearts network idents very dull, and the star is such a contrast. Say what you want about Carlton, but at least that looked fantastic

A Christmas classic in my opinion. The various versions and themes have stood the test of time for me.

I think it's actually more that there was/is a very loud negative opinion of them, than that that opinion was unanimous.

It's a bit like Oneness being the go-to joke around here, mentioned in every thread, it becomes the prevailing opinion. I think they're okay, personally – not worth ditching over the Circles package, and in my view I think they'd be more successful had they come in with a fresh logo and surrounding package, and been cut differently (i.e. not a single shot). To me, they're more interesting than many identities past and present, but they get totally slated on here on a daily basis where other opinions are squeezed out.

But hey, it's just a set of idents!

Well, I'm not! Smile I still dislike them. Beautifully shot and soundtracked, because you wouldn't expect anything else from Lambie-Nairn at their pomp, but don't work as idents for me. I think people are now appreciating them because they are watching them in isolation and not in the context of introducing all different kinds of programmes, day in day out.

Honestly, at the time, I hated them. I thought the balloon idents were stunning, and that it was a travesty to ditch them when they could have easily continued for another few years. Consequently, much of my feelings towards them at the time were based on this, rather than the actual aesthetics of the idents themselves.

Looking back now, more objectively, I'd say they were pretty average, and nothing special. Some nicely shot scenes and some decent music, as you say, but nothing that makes me go 'wow'. I'd put then on a par with ITV1's Alive With Colour idents – nice enough but hardly iconic.
