Ulster television is weighing an audacious £300m bid for SMG, the Scottish media group that owns Grampian and Scottish TV, Virgin Radio and the Pearl & Dean advertising company
the question is what would they do with it other than try to milk it dry?
They'll do precisely nothing as long as it's making a profit.
They could asset-strip it and then sell the remanants to ITV plc. After all, their intention was for an all-Ireland media service (with the offer for TV3), there would be little point in them buying into mainland franchises would there?

Unless of course they see opportunities to increase profits.
Continuity for UTV and STV could easily be centralised to save a few bucks for example. A common package of idents and presentation with just an interchangable S and U might save a few more.

I think the centralised continuity thing has past its sell-by date really where ITV is concerned. UTV will be conscious of the fact that it takes significant resources to merge continuity departments, and the chances are UTV will have merged with ITV by the time they make that lost money back.
As for the general presentation however I think you have a point there. But I think UTV will be more interested in running STV into the ground, as SMG have already removed the vast majority of the fat from STV's carcass.
