They've considered this before and decided against it. The difference now is that the SMG share price has dropped.

the question is what would they do with it other than try to milk it dry?

They'll do precisely nothing as long as it's making a profit.

They could asset-strip it and then sell the remanants to ITV plc. After all, their intention was for an all-Ireland media service (with the offer for TV3), there would be little point in them buying into mainland franchises would there?

That sounds too much like what ITV plc is doing just now.

Unless of course they see opportunities to increase profits.

Continuity for UTV and STV could easily be centralised to save a few bucks for example. A common package of idents and presentation with just an interchangable S and U might save a few more.

I think the centralised continuity thing has past its sell-by date really where ITV is concerned. UTV will be conscious of the fact that it takes significant resources to merge continuity departments, and the chances are UTV will have merged with ITV by the time they make that lost money back.

As for the general presentation however I think you have a point there. But I think UTV will be more interested in running STV into the ground, as SMG have already removed the vast majority of the fat from STV's carcass.

Talking of centralised continuity, it wouldn't work so well for UTV and SMG if UTV bought SMG:

1) It would sound strange if a Irish voice was the announcer for STV (visa versa)
2) STV is moving to Pacific Quay
3) UTV can bodge up on playout

I thought the 'ITVPLC' deal was that they could merge, so long as there was promise not to merge with anyo fthe other contractors?

Surely UTV wouldn't be allowed to sell Scottish to ITVPLC if they bought it?

Would OFCOM even alow a U.T.V. - Scotish Merger?

That would leave just three comopanies operating all of the daytime schedules, with the biggest company having a big stake in the morning contractor.

more likly thing is if UTV / STV got together then there less chance of MR ITV gobbling them up into the ITV brand

for all we know there might just keep things the same as are right now Wink
