I'm afraid I don't really know many details, but I understand that Red Bee have begun testing widescreen switching for the UKTV channels.

So will other shows (which are currently shown in 14:9) be converted to 16:9? Thats a heck of a lot of programmes to upgrade!

UKTV have said in their forums that only the World Cup programming will be in 16:9, everything else will be in 4:3/14:9

I think their nuts not to broadcast in widescreen. Yes I do realise that they need to get widescreen copies of a lot of programming, and that their are extra costs involved, but it makes sence considering a lot of programming they have is in 16:9 as well as all their graphics and adverts.

Not really, apart from Sky, the 5 terrestrial networks and their offspring only a handful of channels are widescreen.

Even with just one programme, UKTV are a long way ahead of the channels run by Discovery, Flextech, MTV and 90% of the other digital channels

I'm pretty sure I heard that a trail and an ad break had gone out in widescreen too.
It's probably unlikely that the archive will be re-edited to 16:9, but since even UKTV's new commissions are originally produced in widescreen, I wouldn't be too surprised if they started appearing this way.

I noticed on MHP that the original UKTV idents were produced in 16:9 - in 1997!
