Just as an amusing anecdote, when BBC Broadcasting & Presentation took over the contract to playout UK Gold and the channel was joined by three new channels: Style, Horizons and Arena, it was known as SHAG TV by quite a few of us Laughing

I dunno. I think all the original UKTV channels were pretty catchy; when one spoke of 'UK Style' it was a hell of a lot clearer about than when 'Home' is referred to now.

Yes, I think sometimes just using a regular word like 'Home', 'Food' or 'Style' doesn't work as a channel name, especially online. Not only does it not signify it as a channel at all, it's difficult to search for (in fact I did discover a new channel called 'Style' on my EPG the other day and it did take me a while to find it online when I was looking up what it was)

Of course the issue they had is what to call them when they split up the genres - 'UK Style' doesn't work as a channel about property.

Similarly, UK Horizons had a hell of a lot more cache than bloody 'Blighty'.

I do remember hearing someone in the BBC science department bemoaning the UK Horizons name because it devalued the Horizon brand. I suppose the same could have been said about UK Arena had it lasted.

Blighty is a good name for what it is... with the old naming convention it would probably be called UK UK

But again what's the point in blighty ? Everything else could cover it all.

Alibi really should be more about drama than crime..

I remember TV Home awarded UKTV Documentary +1 for having the longest DOG Very Happy

I always thought there was potential for UKTV People and then Blighty, but they just seem to forget about it as a channel really.

They were pushing it a lot around the time of the Royal Wedding - lots of Blighty union jack coloured items being held by the crowd

What's the point in any channel?

I would have thought that a general drama channel is a lot more difficult a 'sell' than a themed one. Crime drama is very popular.

The same with documentaries, a general documentary channel is a bit meh.... one about nature and one about history and one about Britain is much easier to market. Discovery of course have done the same (though still have a non-themed one)

I have a feeling Blighty will end up being the channel that they fill Dave Ja Vu with on DTT. Like Really before it joined Freeview it doesn't appear to serve much purpose and its programmes could easily be shown elsewhere. It'll be interesting to see which direction the the channel will take should they go ahead with it.

I'd like very much to see the return of UK Gold as a brand, simply for nostalgia purposes.

Nostalgia aside, but I too would like to see UK Gold back. It was a brand that worked, sums up the channel simply and mainly because the current GOLD branding is hideous, and people still call it UK Gold today.

True, I would say it perhaps came second only to Sky One in terms of brand awareness for non-terrestrial TV channels.

It managed to get a reference on Ab Fab in the mid 90's: "That lunch I had at UK Gold keeps repeating on me"

Do UKTV still plan on replacing it on Freeview?

Yes according to Broadcast who today said that UKTV are to launch their first new channel since 2009 which might be a best-of channel. It also says that each of their channels will be given their own VOD service.

I'm not sure a 'best of UKTV' channel is really needed. They've previously done 'GOLD takes over Dave' kind of things; more of these would be sensible. Yesterday and Really could easily be used to cover the stuff Dave can't.
