I hope they go the way of Alexia's ideas.

I agree with Alexia too - different names under a UKTV brand would be reminiscent of ITV as a network with each channel ( station) individually named,.....on the other hand if you are surfing down the EPG things like UKTV History etc tell you at a glance what the channel is.....it's a tough one !

I dont see you how you can make the connection.

ITV = Carlton, LWT,Thames, Anglia, Granada etc etc -
UKTV = Dave , etc etc

It's hardly the same though, is it? It's not a 'network' in the original ITV sense of word.

You are quite right - I misused the term 'network' - what I meant was brand.
So the ITV brand pre-2002 comprised a family of channels/stations with their own individual names- and UKTV as a brand could do the same. ( I know they did go for the joint ITV/regional branding more than once but it was never really unified til post 2002)
I wasn't trying to suggest that they were the same in terms of how they operate. Apologies if this wasn't clear.

But you could say that of Virgin Media channel such as Challenge and Living now.

Indeed ! So to return to my original point ...I agree with Alexia ...UKTV could just be the family brand ...

The ITV situation was completely different. People only received one of the regions, not all 16. Whether you received Central or LWT, that was ITV for your area. It wasn't necessary to reinforce the ITV brand when there were only 4 channels.

UKTV is a collection of channels which are received simultaneously. If you want people to know that they are from the same company then you have to be rather blunt about the branding. Of course, UKTV may wish to have them operating as isolated entities - but I would view that as a backward step when they've just spent 4 years banging on about the UKTV family of channels.

Perhaps they've realised that they don't need to bang on about each channel's affiliation. There's no real advantage to it - joe bloggs isn't going to be more likely to watch UKTV Style just because he likes UKTV Documentary

But isn't there still going to be some sort of quality association - if you see a good programme on one of the UKTV channels, it may give a edge even just a slight one over viewing a channel which is seemingly on it's own - as is the case for the majority of satellite channels.

That doesn't necessarily mean you need to bang on about the UKTV brand all the time of course but some level of cohesion surely isn't a bad thing.

Not sure about the whole repositioning though - Drama just for crime, Gold just for comedy. The press release mentions the new channel is basically a BBC recent programmes catchup channel, so it looks like the true retro stuff is being completely ditched.

Wonder what the new name channel will be? "The Entertainment Channel", "Prime"?

I can't see them having Dave-like success with relaunching many channels.
