The name is great, and the programmes are good - but I'm not comfortable with the idents.
A friend said it well when he observed that they feature a bunch of wealthy home-counties early twenty-somethings who are clearly happier tossing around in dressing up boxes or larking on the river.
Its not really speaking to normal, hard working people who are looking to flop on the couch after a proper day's work.
Its not even as if the channel identity is aspirational - unless your ambition is to buy inflatable elephants or magician's props.
I think just the name, Dave, worked, it was so strange and new that people were compelled to watch, but the idents are a mess! They need a common ground for them based on something other than a mansion, because does that related to working people who pay income tax and drink beer...NO!
I disagree Gavin. The idents aren't really designed so people can relate to them, they're just supposed to be quirky, and I think they work well.
If I can't relate to it, how can I find it quirky?
I don't think you have to be able to relate to something to be able to find it quirky...
Sorry to be the one to bring in dictionary definitions, but... Quirky:
- A peculiarity of behavior; an idiosyncrasy: "Every man had his own quirks and twists" (Harriet Beecher Stowe).
- An unpredictable or unaccountable act or event; a vagary: a quirk of fate.
The Dave idents are certainly peculiar and unpredictable, so I reckon they are pretty quirky.
I'm not really sure I "identity" with with any TV branding. if it's nice I like it if not I don't.
I really like Dave's Identity - it's one of the better looking multi-channels imo. The constant cycle of Top Gear and panel shows though is tiring, they need more homegrown stuff. Something better then Argumental which was ****.
