When Sky Digital launched each existing channel was given it's channel number according to it's popularity (according to audience figures on analogue satellite/cable) and these were spaced out in 3's - so Sky One went on 106, UK Gold on 109, Living on 112 etc. each new channel went in the next slot after the originals, in numerical order to be fair
The 2 positions after each channel were reserved for them - so UK Gold had 110 and 111 and then launched UK Gold+1 and UK Gold 2 (now Dave) etc.
With a few exceptions (and some shuffling up to close gaps) this hasn't changed much over the last 10 years, but what it does mean is that once UKTV used up their 2 EPG numbers they had to launch their next channel in the next available slot further up the line-up. Hence what is now Dave+1 ended up a long way from Dave.
The Virgin Media channel line up is a lot more logical, AIUI they don't need to be as strict over the ordering. Also as they own the channels that appear from 118 to 131 it's a lot easier to re-arrange them as they see fit - there aren't any third parties refusing to move!
I see, but it does overcomplicate things on Sky though. Sometimes new channels are added or shuffled and it happens overnight with no warning. They should put messages on their TV guide to tell people.

No that's Alibi +1. This is stupid how the main channels and their +1 channels are spaced so far apart. Why is that?
