Anyone notice that the announcer on the G.O.L.D adverts is actually saying G-O-L-D? That will be very annoying if they're referring to the channel like thta consistently. What is wrong with Gold is beyond me.
The only thing I can think of is there is a national network of radio stations known as Gold.

Presumably it's because it's a comedy channel and not UK Gold, so they're using the backronym to emphasise that.
I don't think the radio station is purely the reason
Wouldn't surprise me then that within a year or two "G.O.L.D." is either dropped completely or rebranded as something like "laugh".
Huge mistake though IMO ditching the UKTV branding, and I'm sure a few years down the line some bright branding consultant will get paid a fortune by UKTV to come to the conclusion that all their channels should include the UKTV branding.

It doesn't matter abut the UKTV branding, there's no reason why they should be linked by name and the ommission won't make less people tune in

Isn't the whole point of this maybe about "uniting" them with the rest of the Virgin channels? The likes of Bravo and Living have all done pretty well despite the less-than-obvious link between them - I wouldn't be surprised if they had toyed with the idea of linking these in with the UKTV name, but I think that this new strategy they seem to have for UKTV is probably the best. I've always found the 'UKTV' bit of the names a bit off-putting, to be honest. Kind-of like putting a 'crap' badge on them. Having a portfolio of strong brands is surely better than having one heavily-diluted one-size-fits-all brand.

According to a friend who worked for UKTV at the time, they were considering a plan to rebrand all the Virgin (or Flextech as was) channels under the UKTV brand. If you thought UKTV G2 was bad, apparently we came close to having 'UKTV FTN'. Thankfully someone saw common sense in time.

Imagine the announcer trying to work their way around that!
'If you missed this episode of Krpyton Factor on UKTV FTN, you can catch it on UKTV FTN +1'
