UKTV has put an end to years of speculation by announcing the launch of a sports channel.

UKTV Sport is being given a "soft launch" on October 15 to test the market with advertisers.

A block of sports programming will appear under the brand name UKTV Sport on UKTV G2, UKTV Gold and UK People before a full launch.

It is understood extra investment has been secured by UKTV to increase the budget for UKTV Sport and enable it to finally get the green light.

The bulk of the programming is a new sports series made by TWI, also called UKTV Sport.

Presented by a strong line-up of presenters - leading sports broadcaster John Inverdale, Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis and Radio 1 DJ Nemone - it aims to cover a range of sport, such as hockey, and encourage more people to take part in sport.

According to Sky's website, UKTV will bring the "UKTV Sport channel to Sky, Telewest, NTL and Freeview".

The idea of the BBC or UKTV setting up a sports station has been mooted for over five years.

One source said: "It is difficult for the BBC to launch a sports channel because the corporation's more restricted in setting up new services. It's much easier for UKTV to do it.

"With the extra investment that's been put in it's been made more viable. This block of programming called UKTV Sport is a soft launch. If the test goes well it will become a full channel."

The launch comes at an interesting time for UKTV.

Jointly owned by BBC Worldwide and Flextech, the service's future is in question following the planned merger of Flextech's parent Telewest with rival NTL.

The launch is also timely in light of NTL's declaration earlier this week that it wants to acquire Premiership football matches. It has also mooted the possibility of airing them on free-to-air channels.

Interesting, maybe this will turn out to be a decent sports channel here, and it's very interesting that it will launch on Freeview. Presumably it will replace UKtv Brightideas, which is, let's face it, no loss. This helps widen the genres offered on Freeview, which can only be a good thing IMO.

It'll be interesting to see precisely what they plan to show as at the moment Sky and terrestrial channels show the major sports events.

Excellent news.

A dedicated UKTV Sports channel is a good idea however showing sport of UKTV Gold is daft. I am sure they are trying to turn it into an out and out entertainment and general interest channel!

I wouldn't be suprised to see old snippets of Grandstand & old episodes of Match of the Day played out, along with oth sporting events, I presume there's plenty of people who would like to watch these things. Not me though, I detest sport- especially football, but froma presentation point of view there is interest.

I think it's more likely to be unusual sports that don't get a lot of coverage. All the rights for big sports belong to other broadcasters.

I don't think they'll replace Bright Ideas.. it's the Freeview taster channel for UKTV.

Initally UKTV Sport will only appear as a programming strand across the UKTV Network.

UKTV say that it is too early to say whether it will develop into a full channel.

Those on Freeview can see the programming on UKTV History on Sunday 16. Oct 2005 at 9.00am

Great news for freeview, although I would be interested to see how they are planning to fill their schedules

A nice mis-leading title there - (though I'd have done the same!)

Unless UKTV get a new slot, either Bright Ideas or History would have to go on Freeview, and I think it would certainly be Bright Ideas.

I would suggest though giving UKTV Sport the 24 hr slot, and moving UKTV History to the 6am-6pm slot (perhaps extend to 8pm instead of Thomas Cook TV on FTN!), as it's schedule does repeat every six hours!

It seems the Media Guardian article is misleading: http://www.media247.co.uk/skydigital/newsarchive/2005/10/uktv_deny_launc.php

If you thought that was odd, UK Gold shared some of the coverage of the 1998 Winter Olympics from the BBC for some bizzare reason, they had full BBC presentation and presenters.

yes I think even Granada Plus took on some European matches, it has to be said what would have UKTV Sports showed, the Tiddlywink Championships from the 1980's!! Laughing

Seriously rather then launch more channels, they need to actually sort out UK Gold.
