UKTV Gold New Look?

'Jim'll Fix It' Coming Back too... (October 2006)

I've just been reading an article on Digital Spy about Jim'll Fix It. Apparently it's coming back to UKTV Gold early next year.

And something more exciting for here - the article does mention something about a new look for UKTV Gold next year (I'm presuming for the rest of the network as well).

Terry Wogan also returns to UKTV Gold, which will get a new look next year, with a third series of Wogan: Now and Then beginning in January.

Unless I have misunderstood this, I hope it's true. The current look is very dated (and hopefully this new look will bring more 16:9 content as well).

I doubt the network will rebrand, but UKTV Gold still uses the old idents from before the new logo and typeface and coloured bands came into use.

With the new look, any chance of some actual 'Gold' content ?

Indeed! I don't know what's happened to UK "Gold" recently. Whenever I tune in it is repeats of fairly recent programmes. What's happened to all those excellent sitcoms from the 1970s, 80s and early 90s? I also enjoyed watching Neighbours re-runs back in 1999/2000 when it was on at 4.35pm with an omnibus on Saturday mornings. Now, it's in a graveyard position at something like 5.30am!

Well, they ditched the Gold programming years ago - but looking at recent listing they seem to have ditched the UK programming too in favour of US shows like Prison Break etc.

When I'm on the early shift, then Neighbours is usually shown at 5.30am and 6.00am. But I do agree, I think the channel has really gone downhill in terms of Gold content. Fair enough programmes like Only Fools and Horses, it's a classic and is usually a ratings winner. Also fair enough Wogan Now and Then, at least they usually have a flashback or two, and then they add something extra to it, that I don't object to.

What I don't like is how Little Britain and Catherine Tate are on there, they're not really Gold, stick them on G2 by all means, but they're not Classics yet. And why are they showing Prison Break? Again hardly Gold and nowhere near UK(TV) !

I'm also confused how Have I Got News For You ends up on UKTV Documentary. I realise it's news but nothing like a documentary.

I think UKTV are in need of a re-shuffle and perhaps changing some of the names of the channels (eg. UKTV Gold to UKTV One etc etc).

Or as mentioned, change UKTV Gold back to gold programming.

They have shown imported series for years though. From day one they showed Aussie soaps like Neighbours and Sons and Daughters.

I see your point, but programmes like Sons and Daughters and The Sullivans, is that they were shown on British TV ad naseum for years and in a way became Gold. But back to the point of a programme like Prison Break which has done OK on Five since it began a few months ago, a bit different I think.

What also confuses me is why Murder, She Wrote is on both UKTV Gold and UKTV Drama. I can understand it being on UKTV Drama, but why Gold as well?

So the Jim'll Fix It will be the same as Wogan, just Sir Jim (hope they recreate the chair!) looking at old ones and catching up with MOTP who appeared on the show.

Hope Sir Jim is well enough for it...

I wonder if UKTV will do the same for TOTP? I would rather see full shows from the 1970s and 1980s repeated myself, but I think the Now and Then format would be a good showcase to show clips from the show, as well as get more of the old presenters involved, more than those who turned up for the final regular edition in July.

This Jim'll Fix It thing apparantly has guest presenters co-hosting each week too.

It's hardly an original thing - The Priory and more recently Ant and Dec have both taken the idea of fixing things for people who wrote into the show years ago.
