Fleeting "UK Gold" old break caption & query (July 2007)

Spotted a bizarre 'anomaly' of sorts earlier on UKTV Gold which left me a bit curious...

During Porridge , split seconds before one of the Hopper break bumpers kicked in, it was very, very briefly preceded by what appeared to be a caption for the programme - only, it carried old UK GOLD branding -- circa 10 years or so ago:

As you can see, with current DOG still present, it only partially faded in (about 3 frames) and then disappeared, replaced by a current bumper.

It gives the impression the old caption was burned onto that copy of the episode - intended to be cut away from before shown, possibly - but I'm not sure what the reasoning behind that would be as it seems a rather odd move (especially if it applies to various other progs) so it might well be some cause else...Any ideas?

Some Doctor Who tapes still have old 'End of part 1' graphics that are from when UK Gold launched in 1992. They basically just paste the current graphics over the old tapes.

Looks like the caption was put onto the TX master and the out-point of the tape is a few frames short of cutting off the old caption

You get it on quite a few programmes, if you watch the shows late at night on UKTV Drama you often get the old captions pop up - with no break at all! Oddly the red button prompt still knows there should be a break there though and pops up.

Yep, saw this on Red Dwarf last week on UKTV G2 - and it looks a hell of a lot better than the usual abrupt cut to their caption

That looks so much better than the spacehoppers we've got now.

If they knew they would be repeated for years to come, why edit the captions etc onto the tapes?

Every channel has a refresh from time to time, plus it proves how old the transmission tapes are!

(Ok they're off servers now, but it was off tape at some point!)

It looks like it might actually have been a break board from what I can see.

They didn't know that. I suppose it was just the way they did it back then. It's easier than playing out a seperate end of part caption. After all most programmes on all channels don't do them seperately (although of course most don't contain branding!)

There will still be a tape copy involved somewhere

shows how the BBC are incapable of running a commercial operation, surely they would know how many times they would rebrand, and therefore shouldn't have burnt it on their original copys of shows.
