I know this has been rumoured in a few threads already, but thought it worth starting a specific one now it's been confirmed...

From Thursday 31st January, all 9 UKTV channels will be capable of broadcasting in widescreen. Due to our extensive back catalogue, we can't broadcast every programme in widescreen immediately, but we'll be increasing our library throughout 2008.

It's certainly good news and not before time. Even Channel TV has beaten them to it!

As you say its about time. It is good to see they make a point of saying they won't mess with older 4:3 stuff and will keep it as intended. It'll be good to have Dave in widescreen especially.

Surely a lot of the major stuff on Dave IS widescreen. Top Gear is for a start so thats 75% of the output. Most of the panel shows are too.

I agree besty. Alot of UKTV Drama is also widescreen (especially the "Crime Drama" strand).

That's what I was thinking too, besty. Smile

Laughing at the % you've attributed to Top Gear!

Good news. But UKTV have a habit recently of really screwing up programmes technically. Filmising panel shows, Top Gear and old Doctor Who episodes for example. Lets hope that Widescreen doesn't pose even more of a problem for them.

Hmm... Take a look at the list of programmes Dave show, I reckon about 80% have been filmed in widescreen.

I've noticed this a lot lately in particular, its happening at the point of transmission and I wouldn't be too surprised if it is related to things going widescreen as it seems to be recent stuff currently transmitted 14:9 that is affected in that way.

I hope they take the opportunity to re-acquire some of their programme library to get the 16:9 versions, and possibly reverse some of the bad editing decisions for programmes, both for content and advert breaks.

what about UK gold? and the comedy? drama?

half of the older stuff is not wide-screen!

also I never know this:

"Dave has become the tenth largest television channel in the UK in one month after launch. The broadcaster puts daily averages at around 3m viewers, although much of the growth may be attributed to its presence on Freeview; nonetheless"
