I think if people know the full facts they can have an informed opinion and decide what they want to do accordingly
If I knew
a. how much UKTV paid Freeview or were paid by Freeview for carrying the free to air channels
b. how much UKTV paid Sky or were paid by Sky for
1. carrying the free to air channels
2. carrying the pay for channels.
3. allowing video on demand content
c. how much UKTV paid Virgin or were paid by Virgin for
1. carrying the free to air channels
2. carrying the pay for channels.
3. allowing video on demand content
It potentially help me decide whether I should switch from Virgin to Sky to allow me to watch UKTV programmes in my living room or just keep Virgin and only watch the free to air channels on Freeview on my other TVs that are connected to an aerial
For distribution on Freeview, UKTV pay multiplex operator Arqiva a fee for terrestrial TV bandwidth. They have a total of six slots at the moment. Freeview is essentially a marketing organisation and isn't in a position to pay any broadcaster anything.
UKTV also have their own satellite transponder. They will pay Freesat
EPG listing fees. Again, Freesat isn't in a position to pay broadcasters anything.
Sky will have a deal encompassing the listing of free and pay channels, similar to the deal between Discovery and Sky (which includes free and pay, and provided room for Discovery to launch a second free channel last year, Quest Red). But unlike on Virgin, if the deal with Sky collapsed, the free-to-air channels would remain available on satellite.
Sky has been known to offer discounts to broadcasters in return for on-demand and exclusive content.
