Is UK TV presentation bland? Or is it better than ever? Compare the presentation we have now, to some of the idents on this site:

http://www.idents.tv/blog/

Especially compare the ABC idents, to what BBC One usually churns out. What could be improved on the BBC Idents? Do they need to be changed? Personally, I think that the ABC idents on there, are fantastic, and a lot more lively and active than what we have over here, though they do give special mention to the BBC's Christmas idents, which I do admit, I'm quite fond of. Still, anyone else feel the same?

I agree, sometime I think why can't we do idents australian style (but then again we have create idents, so the announcer has tiem to speak on), though ABC just relaunched this month, with much better idents, their former "everyone's" idents was getting old.

I've always thought that the standard practice of shoving an ident on with voiceover is incredibly bland, regardless of how good the ident is.

The convention that says that things must be done in this way stifles any attempt to make the whole thing look coherent, and I detest the whole way the sound is lowered to let the voiceover in. It just doesn't work in my view.

Maybe they ( CA's) should do something like this:

The ident and the menu is merged.

Still no proper Idents on terrestrial channels though (ABC, NBC, CBS etc..). Scfi idents are funny, especially the gym version.

I agree, the whole trail then ident + anno then programme approach is long overdue for something new. There's a distinct lack of imagination and the air of doigng what they've always done

Not sure if The Potato was commenting on UK television in general or the UKTV channels ?
Agree though that BBC1 's ident s are tedious beyond belief. Still can't stand them.
Its hard to get away from the whole convention of trailer, ident , announcer introduction though. You could drop the announcer but with American and Australian tv there always seems to be something missing. Unless you have checked the EPG or the listings , you often have no idea what is starting - and have to sit through sometimes lengthy title sequences to see what the programme is (if an unfamiliar prog). Plus there's no sense of a shared event without an intro. ...especially with launches of progs.

Anyone got any ideas ? Or examples of things being tried differently?

If you take a look at idents.tv you'll see that they do have menus on Aus TV (aka signposts), and also they have something called PRG, which pop up in when the programme starts telling you what your watching and what the programme is rated, though I still know what you mean about a missing VO, if anything (breakdown) happens they put a still caption up apologising.
