CNN haven't put a profile up, must have been a bit of a last minute thing.
Interesting development though.

I believe that Nikki is currently freelance, since leaving BBC World.

She has been newsreading on Five Live, presenting for CNNI in London, and it will be interesting to see if she does end up presenting Breakfast on Monday.

Today's (Friday 24th) lunchtime UK Today got me thinking…

You'd have thought that the programme would represent the whole UK as equally as possible, which is only really possible in the 18:30 bulletin as there are 13 regions to fit in (14 when the South East splits up).

So, for the shorter bulletins (including lunchtime), as they probably can't fit one story from EVERY region in, you'd have thought they'd have no more than one story from any one region. But both the opening headlines this lunchtime must have been from Midlands Today! One related to Fred West murders (which occurred in Gloucester – and were covered by MT at the time), and the other was about Coventry's bid for the new national football stadium.

You'd also have thought that shorter UK Today bulletins would pick stories spread evenly around the UK, wouldn't you? For example, supposing you can only fit 4 stories into a 5-minute bulletin, they should pick something like: Reporting Scotland, Midlands Today, Look East, and South Today. But they often pick a selection that is crammed towards one end or corner of the UK (e.g. Reporting Scotland, Newsline, Look North (Newcastle), and North West Today – which are all north/north-west UK).

I've noticed this trend before, because I usually watch UK Today in preference to my crap local programme (Midland's Today), but it was only this lunchtime's that it really sunk in.

I'm afraid it doesn't quite work like that. For any given bulletin, a balance of light and shade is needed - and the best news stories and regional features are chosen for each UK Today.

Also not all regions are able to feed their reports in time for them to run in a suitable position in the programme. If a region is cutting a package right to the wire, they aren't going to want to jeopardise its position in their own programme by feeding it to UK Today in London.

Often a package will be recorded from a feed of the local programme sent to London (without astons) - but there is a limit to the number of such feeds which could be usefully recorded. UK Today is not awash with staff - at the weekends the presenter produces, records all the package feeds, writes the links, presents the recorded links, edits the whole bulletin together, and then plays it out live on BBC One. They do a pretty good job for a one man operation (although they do get a full studio crew to record their links)

She used to present the evening edition of The World Today and an arts program on BBC World. The first time I watched her on CNNI (on World news Europe) was the day of the UK elections.

When does UK Today use pre-recorded linking material and when does it use live? AFAIK the links in the 18:30 bulletin is live, and the entire 22:25ish bulletin is pre-recorded.

As far as I know:

Breakfast bulletins LIVE from News24 studio
1.30 LIVE from N6
3.25 Pre-Recorded from N6
6.30 LIVE from N6 but headlines pre-recorded
10.25 Pre-Recorded from N6

I presume the weekend ones are recorded too.

Yet another BBC anchor moves to CNN!
Probably because of CNN's plans to make London the new CNN Europe Centre.

Maybe because CNN pay shed loads of cash for their Presenters, especially ex BBC World ones, ie the competition! Smile

Niki Marks
Jason Daisy
Richard Quest
Veronica Pedrosa

Is BBC World really the competition though?
Sky News are the closest mainstream news channel to CNN International (in terms of viewing figures), so surely they are the bigger threat?
Although I've never understood why Sky have done so well internationally.
In Europe BBC World isn't even in the top 5 pan European channels.
CNN is 2nd and Sky News is 4th, with Euronews in 3rd and Eurosport in 1st.
Although BBC World should be the competition - if we're talking about news agendas, the ratings suggest otherwise.

You missed Riz Khan - who's now left, and Saxon Baines.
If you're interested, on the night Riz left CNN (I remember it because I was moderating the chatroom at the time), he left a link to his website.

Has some stuff you may well be interested in.

Don't forget Katy Haswell - she presented at BBC World for a while I believe - and has since presented CNN arts stuff.

Veronica Pedrosa moved from CNN to BBC World, and then moved back again.

It was late and I had my pyjamas on when I did the list Smile I know there were more, but couldn't remember them. ha ha

There's another one too, but can't for the life of me remember.

I think CNN do consider World to be the direct competitor. Everything World do, CNN try to do and visa versa. They also pinch the World presenters.

Oh well, house chores here I come

Anyone know when UK Today will be finished? I mean when they've got the regions sorted out on digital.

BTW: Even when this does happen, will they keep it as a standby programme - like now?

Pedrosa is a very good presenter. I expect she moved back when CNN turned Hong Kong into a production centre? Sorry, center.
A lot of CNN presenters have come from the BBC, Juanita Phillips may be the one you're thinking of? She started at Sky News Australia, went to BBC World and was one of the presenters on the day of Princess Diana's death, then moved to CNN in London.

I was (although I didn't make it that clear) talking about CNN and BBC World in Europe, not all around the globe.
Without a doubt CNNI and BBC World are the main two competitors around the globe, but in Europe I'm not so sure.
Then again, BBC World has lower penetration than Sky News and CNNI in Europe, so it's not really a fair comparison.

CNN really need a massive overhaul of CNNI - especially World News, which now looks very dated. The 1998 World News looked better!

UK Today is very useful for BBC Online. The streamed news bulletins (which do incorporate UK Today in them) are far better to the international viewer with UK Today in them.
Previously it was NRSE, but for international viewers it is a great deal more interesting to get the entire UK coverage, not just a region like the South East.
