I think part of the Neighbours issue comes from the fact it was being commissioned by Channel Seven in 1984, and all the casting and production got underway, but didn't actually go to air until March 1985. Consequently, every season has been shot around 3 months before air date because it's been shown all year round pretty much since.

It's usual to have a whole series of say a sit-com in the can before showing the first episode. That way publicity stills for the whole series can be released, and if a cast member suddenly becomes unavailable through illness or worse it doesn't cause big problems, it just delays the series.


ISTR one of the later series of 'Brush Strokes' being shot close to transmission, as the 2 leads(Karl Howman & Louise English) were appearing in a play at the same time!
