UK Report

New programme on BBC World (June 2004)

I remember a while ago that the launch of a UK version of the "Direct" family was mentioned on here. Well, it happened last week - Nisha Pillai presents "UK Report", a weekly programme featuring "interesting" reports from around the UK. It isn't a news programme as such, more of a programme full of feature reports, often from regional news (one this week is from BBC London News).

I've taken some screen shots here - as you can see, a nice recycling of the News 24 countdown/regional news images:

Nice use of the montage from the News 24 countdown.

And nice use of the very flexible 7 O'clock News set.

I do find that BBC World DOG very distracting - every time I see it I think that someone has put the tower on-screen incorrectly. It would look better without the URL so the logo can move down a bit.

Nice aston though. Interesting. Not sure what they're trying to do with the UK part of the logo though.

Ooh 800th post!

I thought the 'Direct' family of programmes was being killed off / cut back.

Is this programme likely to end up on News 24 as part of its increased commitment to regional news?

At the moment I suspect not - I think this is a final answer for the UK expats who want more "British" news on World.

Yes, the 'Direct' family of programmes have been axed (I haven't seen them on BBC World for ages), but I was just using the Direct programme family as an umbrella term for the type of programme UK Report is. It's not exactly news; more feature reports.

To be honest, I wouldn't say there is a lack of UK news on BBC World as it is - it doesn't avoid it. If there is a worthy UK story, then World cover it. I suppose the addition of UK Report gives expats some feature stories which would not normally make it onto the main news. Similarly, Asia Today contains feature reports as well as news, which wouldn't normally make it onto the BBC World News agenda. For example, today's Giant Panda story.

My first reaction to that logo was that it said 'LK Report'. I half expected to see Lorraine Kelly hosting it!

I must say the graphics they've conjured up for UK Report are outstanding - even though recycled, that title sequence looks very nice indeed.

Indeed - they look nicer than many of the BBC News Regional titles themselves!

Are these reports that we get in the UK some other way - News 24, regional news, Business Today? Or are they freshly put together for that programme?

Oh no, all reports are cobbled from other outlets. Makes for a very cheap programme

Indeed, today's were from domestic news programmes and regional news as well.

On BBC World Teletext, there is a lot of UK news, as the pages are taken from Ceefax, I don't think BBC Prime Teletext has it though, nice to see one of my ideas come to life, as I mentioned this ages ago if anyone remembers!
