With all these HD trials that BBC and soon ITV, does anyone know which programmes will be made/planned to be filmed in HD? I heard Eastenders will be soon.

Is Holby City still in HD? I know they were filming in HD in 2004, though it might just have been a trial.

Planet Earth, Bleak House, The Proms, Later..., Wimbledon, World Cup.

TVC1 is being kitted out with an HD gallery this summer so expect some big scale studio set peices in HD in the autumn - perhaps Strictly Come Dancing?? (That's speculation based on the fact that somebody at TVC will be despirate to use the kit once it's installed and Entertainment may have the cash to make use of it.)

I read somewhere about The Bill going HD?

I reckon most of the soaps will go HD (in the way the Aussie ones have) as they are generally the most regularly viewed programmes the networks have to offer. They were also among the first to go 16:9 if my memory serves me correctly.

Coronation Street & Emmerdale were actually very late- they were still 4:3 until 2002. Corrie were still shooting locations on film in 1988, so they were gnerally very slow at taking advantage of these things.

Holby shot one block in HD - but still edited SD I believe. That was a short trial, to evaluate shooting in HD, not the wider production issues.

AFAIK only Home and Away is "HD" in Aus - though it is not "HD" in other countries' definition.

Although the show is shot 1080/25p (i.e. HD "film look") it is dowconverted to 576/25p, which can be carried over standard def gear, and last time I heard it was still edited using SD DigiBeta 576/50i edit suites. The 576/25p master is then frame repeated to 576/50p for transmission - which in Aus is called "HD" In the US and Europe it would be at best called ED.

Neighbours, last time I checked, had moved from PAL 16:9 to component SD 16:9, but wasn't HD.

There is actually very little HD origination in Aus - most of the HD they broadcast is either US imports, or upconverts of 576/50i or 576/25p 16:9 stuff. (The last Summer and Winter Olympic Games were both available in 1080/50i - but Aus only got 576/50i feeds...)

You can add Carols from Kings and most stuff from The Royal Opera House. (Basically the BBC is moving most of its classical music production over to HD if it hasn't got there already)

Any new high-end drama is likely to be HD - especially if it is a co-pro - rather than Super 16 telecined to SD. Similarly any high end documentary or natural history shows - especially those that are co-pros with Discovery.

There are hopeful rumours that series 3 of Dr Who might be HD - AIUI the editing system is now almost tapeless and easier to upgrade to HD - though the SFX budget will rocket presumably if these are done HD...

Soaps and general studio shows are likely to take longer to switch - as they are expensive shows to convert. However if the Beeb finally upgrades a TV Centre studio to HD (at the moment they shoot Later by parking an HD scanner outside the studio!) we might see some HD studio shows.

Apart from all the sport (Football, Rugby Union, Cricket) Sky One have announced that Braniac: Science Abuse 4, Final Chance to Save and the Terry Pratchett adaptation Hogfather will all be filmed in HD.

Actually, both Coronation Street and Emmerdale switched to full 16:9 widescreen broadcasts in January 2001.
