On UK Gold this afternoon the credits of Dad's Army rolled as usual and faded to black .. but this black lasted a bit longer than usual, before being replaced 5 seconds later by this apology slide.
No verbal apology was made, presuamably because there was no recoding of this available. The background was active with fireworks going off in all directions, similar to the 'Next' captions and there was the fireworks sound effects all the time.
I will post a video of it later, but I've got to get back to college now!!

i love uk gold, i wish bbc one prime time had the fireworks they always make the programmes sound important - as does uk drama, if anyone has ever seen that
Is there a technical reason why all the UKTV channels can have video breakdowns (i.e. animating) while the BBC's are static? A nice wavy BBC One balloon caption would be great.

I don't think there's any technical reason. I think it's just BBC Network trying to keep things as formal as possible.
BBC Scotland and Wales used to animate programme menus long before the 'fluttering balloon' menu and slide that were seen recently (as a seemingly one-off) a couple of weeks ago.
The Weather is something that the Beeb tried doggedly to resist going down the road of animation on - when ITV's animated clouds 'burst' on the scene, the BBC could have been pressured into doing the same. Even though they still don't, you have animated intros, weather warnings and sometimes you fly over the globe from one country to another!!! So animation is creeping in, but very tight reigns are kept.

I'm not surprised there was a breakdown on UKGold. It's been going downhill ever since the BBC got full control of it.
In fact, in my opinion <rant>everything the bbc does these days is bland and flat with the possible exception of BBC News, however BBC World cancels that out, as I may be in the minority here, but I find it incredibly irritating and amatuerish. You really notice this when you move out of the UK, and the only English channels you have are from the BBC. Thank god for Sky News</rant>.
Bring back the Gold bar, and the programmes UKG used to show. I hardly call a two-week old show prime material for UK Gold.
Just another channel to carry yet more BBC repeats.

Exactly what I was thinking - funny how UKTV's backgrounds in these situations are eye-catching by being animated.
A good one for you Asa would be the BBC Two fish swimming around in a constantly-changing colour background. The fish could be looking for a way out (trying to find a way of disappearing off the screen).

Yes, because the BBC is well know for their technical incompetence... Seriously, one fault does not signify UK Gold going downhill!
What *does* signify UK Gold going downhill is their choice of programming these days...

Here we are, as promised! Ear-plugs are recommended as the fireworks are quite high-pitched
Yeah, the 2 animated apology caption could be based on a Fish tank with a few fishes and bubbles and maybe a tiny 2 on the bed of the tank. Another new BBC TWO ident could be the 2 happily in the water minus the FISH and a huge whale just suddenly swallows it up. This could be a good sequel ident like they did with Paint & Paint Pot back in the 90s!

My point exactly, I wasn't referring to just *one* breakdown, I was referring to the genereal decline of UK Gold including its programming.
Honestly, I'm glad I don't pay a licence fee anymore (at least in the UK).
Watched a taped One Foot In The Grave tonight, which was obviously pre-taped with breaks for an earlier showing...
End of advert...
Animated UkGold One Foot In the Grave Bumper...
Old OFITG slide with old UkGold Logo...
Programme...
I mean... honestly... I could do better with Premier and Windows 98!

What does 'pre-taped with breaks' mean?
Do you expect them to have 2 copies - 1 with breaks and one without, or pay a non-breaked version and cut out of it when it's time for ads?
And if you live in the BBC South East region and you watch UK Gold, how come you don't have a TV license?

I've just moved to Holland, but receive BBC South East, and used to watch UK Gold.
I assume UK Gold prepare programmes by cutting in slides and breaks before storing them for broadcast. That would be why the old slide showed- i'll try to capture and post this example.
