UK G2

New UKTV channel (October 2003)

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but am I right in assuming this will directly replace UK Gold 2?

If so it's hardly the amazing new channel of the year is it. And I can't see why the Media Guardian thinks people will be up in arms over it.

By the sounds of things there'll be no new programmes, just a shuffling round of what UK Gold 1 & 2 currently show.

What was the point of getting rid of play if this will show some things that were on that channel? The BBC were scared that PLAY would take viewers away from BBC THREE so got rid of it, and now that they know THREE is not much, start this G2 channel. Not that its a new channel, just going under a new name and showing better stuff than Daytime programs.

I thought it was actually a requirement that they closed Play, because it was considered uncompetitive to allow them to have a new licence fee entertainment channel when they (indirectly) had a commercial entertainment channel too.

It's audience share has reduced. ITV2 gets a higher share than UK Gold now.

Well obviously, ITV2 is carried on DTT where, with the poor channel choice on offer, it's something of a big fish in a small pond - when the only (direct) competition is BBC3 and FTN it's not surprising that ITV2 does well and that is where the majority of it's viewers come from. It might have more viewers, but in real terms UK Gold is still more popular - if they competed on an even field ITV2's ratings would nosedive.

Yes. UK Gold 2 is colourfully described as 'an opportunity to see programmes from UK Gold's daytime schedule in primetime'. It's actually just UK Gold +9 with different continuity (the schedules from 9AM-6PM on UK Gold are identical UK Gold 2's 7PM-4AM operation). It's useful, but at the end of the day it doesn't offer anything you can't get on UK Gold.

The idea of the channel is that the daytime and evening schedules cater for different tastes and so if people don't want to watch the UK Gold offering they might turn to UK Gold 2. The theory doesn't always work like that however and thus it creates an undesirable situation where UK Gold is effectively competing against itself - and they can't just add all the ratings together as they can on a +1 channel.

UKTV have thus decided to withdraw the channel and replace it with another offering which does actually cater for two audiences. Calling it UKG2 is probably idented to still tie it to the entertainment remit of UK Gold, whilst not specifically doing it through old programming.

I hope this news has meant that the idea of replacing UK Gold with UK Comedy has been scrapped?

Well, as that bloody UK Gold is telling us, UK G2 is days away, and by looking at the first nights line up its.............well..........a tossup between should I bother…..…or Not. I hope they pull their finger out soon!

8:00 - The Kumars at No 42 With Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen
8:30 - Rock Profiles
9:00 - Have I Got News For You
9:40 - Have I Got News For You
10:20 - Double Take
11:00 - Cuttin It
12:10 - Have I Got News For You (As 9pm)
12:50 - Have I Got News For You (as 9:40)
1:30 - Double Take (As 10:20)
2:05 - Cuttin It (As 11pm)
3:15 - Have I Got News For You (as 9pm/12:10)
3:55 - Have I Got News For You (as 9:40/12:50)
4:30 - The Kumars at No 42 With Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen

Now I know BBC CHOICE was very repetitive, but the same HIGNFU episode 3 times in a night?

Surely this is just a commercial version of what was on the BBC a few months back. Is there really a need for BBC3 - I imagine this channel might fare better!

Pleased to see that Rock Profile will be getting an airing again. I've missed it since PlayUK was axed.

I'm sorry, but there really is a need for BBC Three - it's to compete against the wave of repeat channels, which as far as I'm concerned, is what makes up the bulk of most Satellite/Cable channels.

BBC Three's programming has either won or been nominated for several awards, and is seen as having a very good commitment to new comedy in the industry, so believe me, it's far from useless.

What is it with UKTV and running channels on a continuous loop these days? If that's all UKG2 is, then they might as well have just left UK Gold 2 alone - it's got better programming than that.

Hmm - I like your reverse argument for why people watch ITV2 and why it is so popular! That argument is really dredging the bottom of the barrel and screams desperation at me!

If you look at the BARB figures week on week it shows that ITV2 (across ALL platforms - Freeview, cable and Satelitte) out-performs most other channels EVERY week. The only other two channels that beat it intermittently are E4 (when they show a first showing of Friends or some other US sit-com) and SKY One with some of their Sunday night schedule!

Fielding ITV1 extra shows like Pop Idol and Celebrity to help get the audience share up is of course a major factor in assisting people to watch ITV2 and to know where the channel is! But there is no different from BBC showing Fame Academy on BBC Three where I see no-one using the same arguement for why BBC Three is so popular! (lol) Cool
(read it again as there is some logic hidden in there!)

So BBC Three is officially crap but the whole BBC Brigade try and ignore that fact. ITV2 is popular and it used as an argument against the channel. It appears as if sour grapes and people just want rid of ITV as a whole!

ITV2 should get rid of :-
The Planets Funniest Animals,
Judge Judy,
and the awful Trisha extra (or at least the presenter)

Otherwise I feel ITV2 fills the remit of showing extended coverage of ITV1 offerings and also repeat chances of catching up on other ITV1 soaps and documentaries. Overall a good channel and a hell of a lot cheaper to run that ITV1 (i would assume)

If it was a standalone channel, I would agree, but there is not one single programme on BBC Three which wouldn't fit on BBC One or Two. It's a complete waste of time and money.

Well said. It is pathetic when people revert to scraping the barrel in order to bash ITV.

Don't try and lump me with the pathetic BBC Bridgade/ITV Lovers category of person. I have no loyalties with either, if I feel one of them has done well I will say so, if I don't I will also say so. That I happen to make a lot of anti-ITV posts is because I see a lot of things wrong with ITV. And if you look at my other recent postings, you'll see I have made some decidedly anti BBC statements recently too.

To me that argument is simply detailing the situation. If ITV2 operates in an environment where it's only direct competitors are BBC3 and FTN, of course it's possible that ITV2 frequently comes out on top, and does so by a large margin. As I said, it's a big fish in a small pond. The concept of that metaphor is that whilst it may be a big player in it's own environment, it is not comparitively that big at all.

And in any case, what programmes is ITV2 getting those figures on? Are they repeats of the previous night's Emmerdale and Corrie? If a couple of programmes wildly through out the average ratings on a channel which broadcasts to 2 million more people than it's competitors (and cruicially, 2 million more people who are more likely to watch it due to there being a lack of choice), I hardly it can be descried as a strong channel.

But to take your assertion that it is, are you honestly saying that you'd expect such prestigious 9PM ITV2 programming as 'Cruises from Hell' to beat Fear Factor on Sky One or Blackadder on UK Gold if all channels were available to the same numer of people? Or that the unmissable 'Teleshopping' on ITV2 at 2AM (overnight I accept, but still a time when a lot of people will be up) will do better than Angel on Sky One?

So that takes away 3 1/2 hours of weekday programming (Judge Judy alone gets 5 episodes per day taking up 2 hours of airtime - it's a fairly big staple in their schedule) and over the course of a week (adding Planet's Funniest Animals) would mean they'd need to find 18.5 hours of new programming to fill the slots if those programmes were cancelled. Is it really such a great channel?

Looking at an average programming day, ITV2 shows repeats, repeats of repeats, repeats of repeats of repeats, imported American talk shows (repeated in some cases for good measure), trashy cheap filler documentaries in prime time, crap American infomercials for crap products, and programmes which by your own admission are overplayed and crap (Judge Judy used to be watcheable in the past however when it was on once a day weekdays only). The only things of note are a single film, and a few original productions like Dancing in The Street but these all have running times of 15 minutes or less. That's your 'really strong channel' is it? And just to prove I'm not bulls**ting, below is their complete schedule for today.

9:25 - Corrie (might well get high ratings, but are 'bugger I missed Corrie, never mind I can watch it on ITV2 tomorrow' viewers really particularly loyal to the channel? - but fair enough it's useful.
9:55 - Emmerdale (same comment)
10:30 - Trisha Extra (which you don't like)
11:00 - Sally Jessy Raphael
11:50 - 2 episodes of Judge Judy back to back (which you don't like)
12:40 - More Corrie (for the benefit of the 'missed on ITV1, missed on ITV2, 3rd chance to see it' people? Come on)
13:10 - More Emmerdale (same comment)
13:40 - More Trisha
14:45 - More Trisha Extra (which you don't like)
15:15 - The John Walsh Show
16:05 - More Sally Jessy Raphael
16:55 - More Judge Judy - 2 episodes again (which you don't like)
17:45 - Dancing In The Street
18:00 - Even more Corrie (now catering for the really stupid or really unlucky - I take it all back, ITV2 is taking on a public service remit Wink
18:30 - Even more Emmerdale (same comment)
19:00 - Jerry Springer
19:50 - Chart Choice
20:00 - Cruises from Hell (saving the high quality stuff for primetime I see)
21:00 - Fear
22:55 - The Frank Skinner Show
23:45 - More Jerry Springer
00:35 - The Late Show with David Letterman
01:25 - Felicity
02:15 - Teleshopping (I must set the timer for that one)
03:15 - Even more Trisha
04:15 - Even more Trisha Extra
04:40 - Even more Judge Judy (which you don't like)
05:00 - Movies Now
05:10 - more David Letterman (a repeat of the episode on less than 5 hours previously in fact).
