Channel4 thinks this will be new Sex in the City/Friends for Friday nights... God I hope it is

Heres the cast:
America Ferrera
Betty Suarez

America Ferrera secured her place as one of Hollywood's most vibrant young talents with her starring role in the Patricia Cardoso film, "Real Women Have Curves." Her performance earned her a Sundance Jury Award for Best Actress, an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Debut Performance, as well as a Young Artist Award nomination for Best Performance for a Leading Young Actress.

Eric Mabius
Daniel Meade

Growing up throughout the East Coast, Eric Mabius moved almost constantly until graduating from the renowned arts school, Sarah Lawrence College. Immersing himself in acting, writing and film theory, college became the jumping-off point for his first roles in theatre in smaller Off-Broadway productions.

Mabius landed his first film role as the object of Heather Matarazzo's affection, the teen rock star in Todd Solondz's Sundance winner, "Welcome to the Dollhouse." Following the enormous success of this independent film, Mabius chose his roles carefully, carving out a truly unique and unpredictable niche for himself that continues to challenge and impress audiences.

Alan Dale
Bradford Meade

Throughout the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Alan Dale is best known for his role as Jim Robinson in the Australian television hit "Neigbours," and in the U.S. he has become popular with myriad outstanding roles.

Dale will next be seen as Bradford Meade in ABC's "Ugly Betty." As President/CEO of Meade Publications and father of Daniel Meade, Bradford is a well-posed professional seeking the success of both his business and his son. In an attempt to keep his son from sleeping with another assistant, he insists Daniel hire the unattractive yet hard-working Betty.

Tony Plana
Ignacio

Tony Plana was educated at Loyola-Marymount University, where he earned a bachelor's degree through the Honors Program in Literature and Theatre Arts, graduating magna cum laude. He received professional training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

Plana starred as Roberto Santiago in Showtime's groundbreaking series, "Resurrection Boulevard," for which he received 2001 and 2002 ALMA Award nominations for Best Actor.

Ana Ortiz
Hilda

Sultry newcomer Ana Ortiz has appeared on both stage and screen. Most recently she appeared in recurring roles on ABC's acclaimed "Boston Legal" as A.D.A. Holly Raines, and as Anna in the FX series set in wartime Iraq, "Over There." Ortiz also starred in the NBC series "A.U.S.A" and "Kristin."

Heres the plot:

In the superficial world of high fashion, image is everything. Styles come and go, and the only constants are the superthin beauties who wear them. How can an ordinary girl – a slightly plump plain-Jane from Queens – possibly fit in?

If you took a moment to get to know Betty Suarez, you'd see how sweet, intelligent and hard-working she is. But few people do, because in the world of high fashion Betty is the oversized peg in the petite round hole. When publishing mogul Bradford Meade hands the reigns of Mode, the bible of the fashion industry, over to this son, Daniel, he specifically hires Betty as his son's new assistant – mostly because she's the only woman in NYC Daniel won't sleep with. Though this "player" is reluctant to accept her at first, Betty's indomitable spirit and bright ideas will eventually win him over. Neither of them really knows the ins and outs of the fashion world, but the two are a formidable team against those who will do anything to see them fall.

And they really are swimming with the sharks. Diva fashionista Wilhelmina Slater is incensed that Bradford Meade passed her over and promoted Daniel to the coveted job after the mysterious death (or was it?) of Mode's legendary editress, Fey Sommers. Wilhelmina, along with toadying assistant Marc and scheming receptionist Amanda, are out to sabotage Daniel and Betty any chance they get. Betty finds a friend in warm-hearted Christina, who works as the magazine's in-house seamstress and seems to know everything about everybody who works there.

Away from work, Betty's home life is far from glamorous. Dad Ignacio and her sister, Hilda, worry that she's just setting herself up for a fall, while nephew Justin encourages his aunt to dream big (even if he's aghast at her fashion sense). Nerdy boyfriend Walter, who unceremoniously dumped Betty, keeps turning up despite her attempts to get him to stay away.

"Ugly Betty" stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, Eric Mabius as Daniel Meade, Alan Dale as Bradford Meade, Tony Plana as Ignacio, Ana Ortiz as Hilda, Ashley Jensen as Christina, Becki Newton as Amanda, Mark Indelicato as Justin and Vanessa Williams as Wilhelmina Slater. Recurring guest stars are Michael Urie as Marc and Kevin Sussman as Walter.

Based on "Yo Soy Betty La Fea," the groundbreaking Colombian telenovela that became an international phenomenon, "Ugly Betty" is from Touchstone Television. Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Salma Hayek is executive producer, along with Silvio Horta ("Urban Legends"), Ben Silverman, ("The Office"), Jose Tamez ("The Maldonado Miracle"), James Parriott ("Grey's Anatomy") and James Hayman ("Joan of Arcadia").

It all sounds great, but if they want it to be the next big thing, I always think that the best way to do it is to start it off quietly. It's how a lot of successful shows start off, and unfortunately with the media constantly spotting "the next big thing", they are catapulted to the top in 3 days, and forgotten about 3 months later.

That's quite true, but the "number one show in America" promos got people talking about Desperate Housewives before season 1.

The majority of Ugly Betty teasers haven't given anything away about the actual show, either, which I suppose may work in its favour. There's nothing worse than watching something and feeling like you've seen it all before in the ads. Confused

I've seen it, and trust me it's a good show. It's funny and catty. Laughing

I've seen the first episode, and it's definitely as good as everyone says.

It also stars whatsherface off of 'Extras' - you know, the Scottish one....

Ah, America Ferrera! I used to go to school with her. Mind you in those days she was known as Gertrude Pluckett. Very Happy

It'll certainly get a boost from being scheduled around the Celebrity Big Brother eviction shows, but I'm not convinced Friday night is the best night for a comedy drama.

It should do well enough though.

No "first look" screenings on E4 straight after the episodes, but they do screen the next episodes on Wednesdays at 9pm.

C4 though now have a major problem of playing out most their big US (and UK for that matter) dramas in the first half of the year, leaving Autumn pretty bare.

They are going to have to change strategy soon, perhaps showing the first part of some US series in the Autumn soon after they air in the USA (around 10 episodes), leaving the remaining half of the series to air in the Spring.

Perhaps then they might get away with showing other US series to fill the gap during January and February, then taking a break and picking up again in May/June.

Ch4 originally planned to air this in the T4 strand. However after seeing how phenomenally well it performed in the states and how poorly their big commission - the much hyped 'Studio 60'- tanked they had a change of heart. Studio 60 will now only air on 'More4'.

It's a great show, with a great mix of drama and comedy. It airs on ABC in the US.

Does anyone know who did the tune on the trailer? It sound's very 80's and a bit familiar actually, unless it's new tune & I'm imagining I've heard it before?

It's "U Got The Look" by Prince.

I think that I'll be watching, just to see what I think.

The trailers do look good.

The trailers seem to be giving a bit more away now.
