Because, as you went on to say, what is the point in duplicating what is already on a free to air channel? As it happens, they ended up showing the BBC One coverage and Ian Palmer in a pub on a split screen for much of the penalties which was probably the best thing they could do. Sky News had cameras in Leeds and Rome but their coverage was quite boring really. Sports Tonight had an England fan and an Italian fan in the studio as well as a couple of presenters and although they generally talked over each other, it was quite fun coverage and it is good to see a channel doing something like this.
Sky News and Kay Burley were quite rightly praised on this very forum for the coverage of the Queen's Jubilee Concert a few weeks ago so there is some demand for guerilla coverage of these events. For me, as a television fan more than a football fan, I enjoyed some of the alternatives to the BBC One coverage. There are also TVs at airports, gyms and offices where it may not be so easy to switch to BBC One, I'm sure some people in these locations appreciated BBC News' and Sky News' coverage too. I just hope the draconian laws brought in to protect the Olympics don't ruin this kind of coverage over the next few weeks.
What would be the point of that? If they have the ability to show the coverage why not just show it, what's the point of throwing to a bloke in a pub?

It annoys the heck out of me when the news channels feel the need to cover an event which is on a free to air channel.... their viewers aren't interested, that's why their watching a different channel to the one the match is on!
