What would be the point of that? If they have the ability to show the coverage why not just show it, what's the point of throwing to a bloke in a pub?

Because, as you went on to say, what is the point in duplicating what is already on a free to air channel? As it happens, they ended up showing the BBC One coverage and Ian Palmer in a pub on a split screen for much of the penalties which was probably the best thing they could do. Sky News had cameras in Leeds and Rome but their coverage was quite boring really. Sports Tonight had an England fan and an Italian fan in the studio as well as a couple of presenters and although they generally talked over each other, it was quite fun coverage and it is good to see a channel doing something like this.

It annoys the heck out of me when the news channels feel the need to cover an event which is on a free to air channel.... their viewers aren't interested, that's why their watching a different channel to the one the match is on!

Sky News and Kay Burley were quite rightly praised on this very forum for the coverage of the Queen's Jubilee Concert a few weeks ago so there is some demand for guerilla coverage of these events. For me, as a television fan more than a football fan, I enjoyed some of the alternatives to the BBC One coverage. There are also TVs at airports, gyms and offices where it may not be so easy to switch to BBC One, I'm sure some people in these locations appreciated BBC News' and Sky News' coverage too. I just hope the draconian laws brought in to protect the Olympics don't ruin this kind of coverage over the next few weeks.

That's it then. Euro 2012 is now over. No point in continuing to watch now that it's just a foreign soccer tournament!

What a xenophobic and quite frankly inappropriate comment.

And coupled with a Laughing emoticon probably not really meant to be taken entirely literally...

Either way it had nothing to do with presentation. I look forward to the day when DJGM makes a pertinent comment.

But entirely accurate. There's no domestic interest in Euro 2012 now any more than there is in the African Cup of Nations.

Not that there ever was THIS side of the border anyway....

Of course that didn't stop Euro 2008 rating reasonably well.

News values, it clearly is a newsworthy event and should be covered accordingly by News outlets. The News Agenda should NOT be skewed simply because the event is being covered elsewhere.

But who are they broadcasting to? There's no point doing a story if you know that no-one who's watching you is interested in it

I remember a Tim Henman match years ago where you could watch it live on BBC1 and if you turned to the regional news on BBC2 you could watch people in a pub watching Tim Henman! Shocked

Plus it wouldn't have been shown if the game hadn't gone to penalties - I don't see why that makes it anymore newsworthy.

Very wet weather that June. More people stayed at home. I for one don't remember anything of E2008.

No, the best thing they could do is provide an alternative to those who don't care about the football!

Not from me, I remember commenting on how pointless it was. She wasn't even near the stage, she was interviewing people at the back of the crowd who either didn't have tickets or arrived too late to get near the front! On that occasion BBC News did a bit better as they were doing backstage interviews.

It's not really comparable, because it's not a single one off event so there won't be endless 'here's people watching something' coverage. The other channels will be able to do results and highlights (after a while) but as I understand it they won't be allowed in the park

Indeed, they are more exciting than the rest of the match so if anything, telling the audience of a news channel that there's a penalty shootout happening will just cause a lot of their viewers to turn over and watch it!
