Can understand the 5Live problem though. In the World Cup they did it as audio only so not that issue.

Presumably the only platform you couldn't view it audio only was DTT.

I'd imagine even most the people wanting to hear a bit of Moyles probably didn't want him to take up that much of the screen. So they could have just given the option to have him in-vision to Sky and Virgin Media viewers.

So in the wake of the pageant the BBC feel the need to celebrify tonights match with the Moyles commentary on the red button. Wouldn't be an issue if it was audio only - but anyone wanting the 5Live commentary has to endure Moyles in vision in the corner of the screen.

What platform was that on? Virgin had Moyles in vision on option 2 although you could choose option 1 which was as BBC One but with the option of switching audio between TV commentary/Moyles/5 Live.

Shame they couldn't just use the audio description facility really, as going through Red Button is not only slow but you lose the HD too.

Freeview with the one and only red button video stream (don't worry, you'll be getting that service after the Olympics!)

I agree there is little reason why audio can't be done through the main channel stream - they do blame stat muxing etc. but they've had years to sort it and when they closed the other Freeview streams said they were looking at it for the future. S4C do it through their main channel.

Yes, digital TV has facilities for multiple audio channels for different languages but I suspect the problem is more that it would mean having everyone fish through menus (although it's on the help button on the Sky remote I think) to change the language and you'd have 'select French for 5live, German for Moyles etc.

Although Euronews do it with an on screen menu

As do S4C - a red button indicator next to a microphone symbol.

How come the interview on the pitch at the end of the match had a Euro 2012 branded mic cover, but all the other pitchside stuff has used BBC Sport branded covers?

As stated before one broadcaster (or probably one for each side) is chosen to do pooled pitched interviews after every game.

At international sports events, the host broadcaster allocates slots after the event, for interviews, these are (or were) called 'Unilaterals', because they usually go out on the main international feed. Any broadcaster that hadn't cut away from the coverage in time, would have seen (and heard) the interview.

Often the Unilateral pecking order is determined by the result of the event, so last night the Beeb would have probably got Slot 1, SVT Slot 2, and other interested broadcasters any remaining slots.

The unilateral slots are entirely under the control of the host broadcaster, their OB truck, and their director. That's why the mic had a Euro 2012 windsock.

The half time stuff with Gabby would have been a separate two camera unit, that either the Beeb flew in, or rented locally. Totally under their (the BBC) control, though the circuits/uplink back to the UK are usually organised by the host.

I can imagine the world feed being very similar to the Champions League, interesting enough as always with tournaments, there is usually only the one world feed commentator which happened to be Yorkshires own John Helm for the England match.

due to the beeb having simultaneous matches last night, the second set in the BBC Sport Centre was pressed into action for the BBC Three game.

I don't get really why they use the second set for network broadcasts in these circumstances. Surely they'd want to use the better set for the broadcast which has the most viewers, so BBC Sport should use the main news set with the sports news coming from the second set for the period.

Is the second set used that often for sports news considering timing have been rejigged to avoid clashes with BBC News and BBC World?

Brekkie, what you must understand is what we call the ' secondary' set is cleary better suitted for sport coverage, the other set is very newsy and can't be tailored for individual sport and BBC Sport brands in quite the same way.
