I think it's cost. Although it's debatable how big the savings will be as Jake Humphrey and a pundit seem to be at most of the live games. They're sending Alan Shearer back to Salford after 2 days.

They always do that in all tournaments, regardless of where they are, they had Ray Stubbs at the grounds in Euro 2008 while everyone else was in the Vienna studio, and in 2002 ITV had Jim Rosenthal and John Barnes at the grounds (which I think might have been because Jim Rosenthal's contract guaranteed him some role at the World Cup, because he didn't do much and went back after the group stage to do the F1). It's no different to sending a reporter out there, presumably Jake is doing other stuff too. Usually the Beeb have three or four reporters out there and in Logan, Johnson, Humphrey and Walker I've seen four so far, so it's no extra expense.

ITV had Ned Boulting at the ground for the Ireland game. And Shearer might be there doing stuff for a sponsor or something.

And don't forget that it's not just the studio team back in Salford - it's all the production staff. Compare that to South Africa two years ago, where the whole operation was based in Cape Town. That's where the money is being saved. I don't really know how these things work, but would the cameras/sound/talkback systems be being run from Salford for Jake and Alan Shearer pitch side, or would they need another gallery on site? If the whole programme was being run from pitch side then the latter would undoubtedly be the case.

I put together some screen grabs from RTÉ player to give you an idea of what RTÉ's coverage looks like. Note the studio colour change for a Republic of Ireland match.

The lighting change on RTÉ was incredibly cheesy, they did it all of a sudden!

The graphic you see there in those pictures with the Sky Sports News style layout is not part of the official graphics. Its something RTÉ do with every team sport during the build up, but normally its colored a rather more tasteful blue and in a different font. Likewise the ticker is RTÉ's work and not UEFA's either, and is also normally blue.

I wonder how ITV are getting away with not airing the official sting at all. Maybe it isn't compulsory at all and the BBC's use of it is optional.

ITV have, as if as an afterthought, included the official logo on the opening titles, which the BBC haven't though. As I said earlier I'm surprised either are getting away with not using the official titles in full (though the BBC are using the break sting into matches and at half time). I don't think any broadcaster (including ITV) anywhere gets away with not using the entire official package, including the opening titles, to either the Champions League or Europa League.

The BBC's title sequence is quite decent, mind you...but ITV's is just scary. And what possessed them to use Peter's theme from Peter and the Wolf as their theme music, I have no idea.

Looks like ITV have a similar arrangement to the Champions League then in terms of sponsors, with a combination of official tournament sponsors sponsoring their coverage.

Its the same on RTÉ. The sponsorship is likely actually with UEFA rather than either broadcaster.

I think this is what I thought ITV might do. They did something similar in 2004, like I've mentioned previously. Instead they've gone with a look where the studio pres doesn't even match their match graphics.

Good work from RTE, they've got a cohesive look to their graphics.

It was composed by Prokofiev. He was born in what is now Ukraine.

It's very hit and miss between the BBC and ITV with regards to whether they want to go contemporary or classical with regards to their themes, and it seems to alternate.

World Cup 1998 France : BBC - Pavane by Faure; ITV - Rendez-Vous by Jean-Michel Jarre
Euro 2000 Belgium/Netherlands : BBC - Andrea Bocelli - Canto Della Terra (reached #40 in the charts)
World Cup 2002 Japan/Korea : BBC - Tarantella by Faithless; ITV - Madam Butterfly by Puccini (set in Japan)
World Cup 2006 Germany : BBC - Handel's See the Conquering Hero Comes ; ITV : Heroes by David Bowie performed by Kasabian
Euro 2008 Austria/Switzerland : BBC - Mozart's Symphony #41; ITV - The Magic Flute by Mozart (Austrian composer)

Certainly didn't see any of the artefacts talked about yesterday, and it seems the clock got fixed.

RTÉ's set is similar to the sort of thing ITV might have had in the 1998 World Cup.

The score bar looked nice.

In the 2002 World Cup, ITV had a stylised World Cup logo at the end of their opening credits, but after about three days it was replaced by the official logo, presumably FIFA moaned at them.

I'm sure Adrian Chiles and the ITV pundits were feeling a little twitchy after the game . . . the camera panned down from their studio into the square below, where a couple of dozen fans were being confronted by a water cannon and a 'couple of hundred riot police' according to Chiles . . . perhaps a little too close for comfort.

It makes you wonder if safety concerns were really part of the BBC's reason for not basing themselves permanently in one of the host nations.
