For some reason, that '1' logo just didn't click with the viewers whereas the '2' logo which launched at the same time did and is of course still used. I've no idea why, but research at the time of the demise of the '1' logo showed that people knew the '2' meant BBC TWO but didn't associate that '1' with the BBC at all.

I'd guess that was because the '2' was the focus of the idents and appeared doing things and forming in interesting ways. With BBC1, the globe was the focus of the idents, with the '1', just placed in white in the middle of the globe not really doing anything.

The 1 had a striking shape and would have been the perfect ident but everytime they did something with it for trails or made it the Christmas ident, we still saw the globe being used to introduce programmes. So the globe was still considered to be the symbol for BBC1. They missed a big opportunity there with that one.

Could be, but the '1' logo did appear in dozens of animations which appeared between trails (much like the '2'), and it was on screen top left during all trails too. This was the house style for BBC One and Two from 1991 onwards. Somehow though, the '2' caught on, and the '1' didn't.

Caught both of these idents on Saturday night and must say I was surprised that we had two launched in the same night, although had my computer been working I would have been able to read the forum and have known. In fact, I didn't realise Mission Control was an ident until the symbol formed!
Personally I think Mission Control is alright but is let down by the quick shots of the rover and the lack of music towards the end bar the three nores. Forest on the other hand is a much better ident with more interesting and stunning visuals and an improved soundtrack building on the theme.
Echoing comments from other posters, what lets this set down is the lack of a good audio soundtrack to the idents.

Magic Forest was apparently supposed to have launched last month, and yes, it has been supplied to the regions.

It seems that way, but I myself have always considered those stings that were on BBC 1 to be just as good as those on BBC 2. It's a shame that such a diverse selection is no longer seen on either channel, if any are shown at all.
To make a distinction between both though:
If you look at BBC 2's stings, the '2' was more often being used as an animated character that did things (see Pounce, Trailblazer, Sneeze).
On the other hand, the '1' was often an inanimate, solid object forged from materials or acting as part of an scene or item (see Diamond, Topiary, Weather Vane, Ring Pull).

I agree the BBC1 stings were very inventive and used lots of different styles such as models and computer animation. They could have been the way forward.

Was anybody else pleased that we had 2 new ones on the same night and not, like with the dancers, 1 new ident played in every friggin junction on the night? It was like the old days of the balloon where you'd get 2 or 3 new ones at a time.
What do you think the chances are we'll get some more for the Autumn?
