Just been reading an article on Digital Spy TVS - Television Sydney. Looks like a FTA televison channel TVS will start November in Australia. If I remember correctly the TVS name used to be a franchise holder on ITV bout 15 years ago in the south and south east region.

Yes, yes TVS which will start broadcasting (hopefully) in November 2005, currently it's 5 months behind schedule. TVS is a community TV Station and it's a not-for-profit organisation, owned by the University of Western Sydney and Metroscreen. It better be better then Sydney's previous Community TV Station: Community Television Sydney (CTS) (shudder)

Basic piece of ITV history. Television South (TVS) replaced Southern Independent Television as ITV contractor for the south of England in 1982, with the region newly-split into south and south-east sub-regions.

In 1992 TVS lost out to Meridian who replaced them on New Year's Day 1993.

Apart from the UK operation TVS also acquired the US MTM business.

I always thought it rather odd that TVS lost out to Meridian. They used to provide quite alot for the network.

But then again, the 1992 Franchise round was rather politically motivated - hence also the loss of Thames, TSW, TV-am etc.... Sad

If it was politically motivated then TV-am would have won the franchise, as Bruce Gyngell (TV-am's boss) was very good friends with Margaret Thatcher. Though there is no official comfirmation about it, but it was very political for the demise of Thames because of the Death On the Rock scandal.
