I'm fairly certain Five Live didn't go off air any time this afternoon (or any obvious interruptions in studio based programming) - so was it just the bit round the courtyard/stage door area that was evacuated?

Why do they have to put on tapes when things like this happen?

The BBC has so many studio locations that you think someone might be able to go on air from a different place, explain the situation, and try to improvise the show as best as possible. Sort of like what they did during the power outage in 2000.

Improvise, how do you fill half an hour of random programming? You'd have to have a studio geared up for every genre of programming availiable at the drop of a hat. There's no way it could be done

Tapes work with no human intervention, everyone can get out and everything can run by itself until they get back in again. (although playout is the last place to evacuate - unless the fire is in playout of course!)
