Why is there a dirty great pillar in the middle of the studio?

To stop the ceiling falling down Rolling Eyes

More details in the link I posted, but basically they were a converted office block rather than being purpose built. I believe one of the studios at that Thames/TalkbackThames/ Freemantlemedia/RTL Group have at their current building down the road in Stephen Street also has a pillar in it..... again they were converted from offices

To support the floors above? It isn't uncommon to have to cope with pillars in the middle of studios built in tower blocks...

Never?! Yes, thanks, I do know what a pillar does. I was just surprised to find one in the middle of a tv studio.

One of the things I like most about this forum is the total lack of sarcasm and smart alecs.

I was browsing through the Channel 4 website and it showed it's very distinctive building, if C4 doesn't produce anything, what's the large building for?

Offices, they also playout their channels from there.

The building does have a studio and post production facilities owned by a subsiduary called124 - http://www.124.co.uk/

nice to see the (ex) big breakfast house now that it's lived in, (thanks for sharing the pic 'Whataday') it's nice of the owners not to hide it all from public view, it must be strange living in a building which used to be on tv. be interesting to see how brookside close develops as a real residential street and if it will be shut off to the public.

Yep - 124 have provided facilities for T4, Right to Reply etc., and can also be used by non-C4 clients if they are available. (Bit like BBC Resources or London Studios) They are quite nicely built studios - C4 had incredibly high engineering standards at the time they were being built. They were the only UK broadcaster to select D-5 as a VTR standard, over Digital Betacam, because they wanted a format with no compression. (D-5 is so good it is used WITH compression to record HD)
