The Granada office block at Quay Street was one of the last of the original set of buildings to go up - it was completed in 1961, according to my reading of old copies of Television Mail.
And the houses in the Coronation Street set are not 3/4 size - they are full-sized houses. I think there's some confusion here with an earlier external set which was scaled down and required clever camera angles to disguise the fact.
Yes the original outside set which they used from 1968-1982 was 3/4 size.
Sorry boys! It's not a faint remenant of the "W" - it's an unfortunate reflection on the windscreen of my car.
The company who manufactured the frontage stated that it is plastic coated cladding which was removed and replaced. Therefore there should be nothing left of the westcountry "W" - especially seeing as the Carlton star was there for a few years!
EDIT
:
I have studied the original of the image - in close detail - and it DOES in fact look as though it is part of the building rather than the reflection in the windscreen as I first thought. Looks as though I was just lucky to catch the sunlight at such an angle to show it.
Obviously they did the re-cladding on the CHEAP since it shows through - I wonder if the Carlton star shows through on the other bit when taken from the same angle?
How did the actors approach the doors if everything was 3/4 size? Did they only use it as a background and do the close ups with scenery?
As a teenager I went to see the original Corrie 3/4 set (there used to be a space in the gate covered with mesh for fans to have a look) AFAIR the set was only 3/4 size from a horizontal perspective, the height of the buildings was genuine.
To compensate for this they used to always create shots at a very oblique angle from one end or the other of the street.......this cleverly disguised the width of the buildings, although doors were the correct width to allow close-up shots to appear correctly.

Yes this is the original outside set from 1968 up until 1982, the houses didnt even have back added to them until the early 1970s. This set was situated the other side of the huge warehouse building (seen behind the medical centre on the current set) where Granada Studios Tours were.

On this set notice there is nothing where the medical centre is now,
we didnt see any shots of that area before 1982 I dont think.
By my reckoning, where the Rovers Return is on that pic of the old Corrie set, is roughly where the replica
version of the Rovers Return was built (and AFAIK is still there) especially for the Granada Studio Tour.
Or am I totally out with my reckoning there?
In which case, where does eveything on that old pic compare with what's there now?
