Perhaps they could take more space in the proposed "Cube" extension to Mailbox? See - The Cube

nope - the rumoured expansion is within the mailbox itself

up or down?

up to where? it was hard enough getting permission for a single dish on the roof; like hell will they be allowed to build there.

they're hoping for level 6 at the moment, perhaps more later if some of the shops on the lower floors don't survive.

And then theres planning permission to turn retail space into office space in a development with restrictions on it... Wonder if they are having a few regrets? Maybe that has something to do with the Manchester delay. I can see it now Gordon Burns Live from the roof of the Arndale Centre, in a tent coz we didn't think we needed the room.

Yes I assumed that; there are other tennants who may or may not be on the move, and still some unlet floorspace within the building. I was thinking that in theory there may be space available in "The Cube" nearby if needed in the future too - and the Cube will be visible as the backdrop for the weather / politics show too!

I drove past the former Southern / TVS / Meridian studios at Northam in Southampton the other day. A very sad sight indeed - all boarded up and wire-femced off. The vandals are having a good go at making their mark on it. But the Meridian sun is still there! Sadly I don't have a pic.

This picture I took last July, (2004)

I do have more images of similar instance (but taken this year in better light) being more close- up. If anyone wants them, please message me!
You can see clearly where the old TVS holes are!

Looks bigger than Maidstone to me.

I don't suppose anyone has a picture of The Great Hall - Tunbridge Wells (South East Today/BBC Radio Kent studios)?

At the same time they did a deal with Kingston Communications in Hull to use their KIT network to do a lot of experimental local TV stuff - hence Queenies Court in Hull. (Greg Dyke was a colleague of the the then CEO of Kingston.)

Although to be fair Humberside (due to the fact that Kingston Communications have run the telecoms there rather than BT) is the only place with the technical infrastructure to do that stuff

Why didn't the BBC just buy the former Central building on Broad Street? Moving there would have also fulfilled the BBC's current mandate to move to buildings 'closer to viewers'. Pebble Mill was wastefully large, but buying the Broad Street studios would have allowed them to have everything under one roof, with enough space for Doctors and other occasional productions too.

The problem I suppose is that it isn't a modern enought building for what the BBC wants. The trend now is for large spaces and open plan offices, Broad St is a 1960's design with lots of small rooms - whereas the BBC need flexibe space so they can easily adapt to anything new that comes along.

Are they old images, or do those buildings still have the old signage on them? I know the BBC Radio Derby building still had the 80s signage on it as late as 1998.

BBC Leeds at Woodhouse Lane had a /B/B/C/ North style sign on it until it closed I think, and signs with the BBC North "N" device as seen on Look North a few revamps back.

Many KIT customers would tell you that the infrastructure is rather unreliable. The further you are from the exchange the more wonky the service. I know far too many people who got rid of it and went back to satalitte instead.
Not wanting to be pedantic but as some one who was born in the East Rding of Yorkshire and now thankfully has had the county returned, Only the BBC insist on prolonging the 'H' word Wink

Very Happy True. 'H' police will dissappear within 2 years merged with North Yorks Police & now the 'regional' fire and rescue call centre is to be in Sheffield or Rotherham there will be no need for a 'H' fire service - all of which would have been good stories for Look Hull but there was not enough time to fit them into the programme as its been a busy time for lots of D list guest and banter & prattle. As for Radio Bumblealong they had considered a name change but no one has the guts to admit that it doesn't cover the TSA as they may rock the boat at Regional office. Maybe they could have a competition to choose a new name - let the listeners decide.

Yep - I think the Southampton/Northam site had more studio capacity than the Maidstone/Vintners Park site. At least Maidstone still exists as The Maidstone Studios - and in fact AIUI it has expanded since the days of TVS.

From memory Vintners park wasn't completed by the time TVS took over from Southern, but as they co-operated on the handover (with TVS buying the Northam site from Southern and the local news archive as well I think) TVS were able to work out of the small Southern Dover studios initially, whilst they also converted a theatre (or was it a cinema) in Maidstone to make non-news shows in the South East before the opening of their own purpose built South East operation. (ISTR Fraggle Rock was made in the converted theatre/cinema - but that this has since been demolished?)

On most occasions franchise winners have co-operated with franchise losers, and bought existings facilities. Exceptions were Westcountry and TSW, Carlton and Thames, GMTV and TVam, though all for differing reasons.
