The Beano sponsoring The Simpsons on Sky 1 is an odd one.

They seem to have stopped that already.

It was but they stopped it on The Simpsons and Futurama. Before that it was Onki (I think that is correct Very Happy) Overdrive but I also remember Currys, Domino's, Fizzy Chewits and Sonic Generations.

Domino's Pizza sponsored The Simpsons on Sky for a very long time, I think it was ten years by the time they ended it because they celebrated it by showing all their old sponsorship bumpers. And then shortly afterwards they stopped sponsoring, which I thought was odd, but I guess that's why they did the retrospective.

When The Simpsons started on Channel 4, Pizza Hut were the first to sponsor and I always wondered whether that was by design to copy the Sky/Domino's success or just happy accident. (Probably just the latter).

I think that was related to the ban on junk foods advertising in programmes with specific appeal to children.

I wouldn't count out Pizza Hut wanting to replicate their rivals' work. It's like when Autoglass stopped sponsoring the Football League Trophy and their rival Auto Windscreens immediately started sponsoring it instead.

So Close! I just remembered another one as well - The Penguins of Madagascar film. However, AFAIK C4 have had a lot more sponsors for the show, the last time I checked it was Birds Eye but that was about a year ago. Is it still Birds Eye?

That in itself wasn't odd at first glance. There's a clear fanbase overlap there. What was weird is that the bumpers relied on Youtube clips (which are used on the website) and not the comic content... and also that Simpsons Comics is a Beano competitor, meaning that Beano was unable to mention the sponsorship in the comic.

The Fosters "money never sleeps" bumper must have been used for at least nine months, I am absolutely sick of the sight of it. The best thing about Catastrophe is that C4 consider it a drama and they don't sponsor it.

As you say, the 3 ones were fantastically bad, the comedian was Spencer Jones who is a regular on the circuit and was in Upstart Crow last year (as the character who was a parody of Ricky Gervais). It was terrible observational comedy that was always going to look ridiculous next to proper comedy, and as you say they seemed to abandon it quite quickly without any proper bumpers to replace them, just the logo on a blank screen. Grolsch used to sponsor C4 comedy as well for a while.

Twenty years ago Cockburns Port used to sponsor all ITV's comedy, including the Comedy Awards and the Audiences Withs and anything else that came up. That also included the first series of Cold Feet but it was an appalling match, it was some Marquess of Bath-style comedy posh bloke causing chaos in a stateley home, which looked ridiculous alongside the modern and subtle comedy of Cold Feet. Around the same time of course Becks sponsored all of C4's drama but after a few weeks of Queer as Folk they decided it was getting too explicit and withdrew it, to general derision.

The Fosters ones are that sort of awkward comedy that makes them get old and annoying very quickly.

Was it Play to the whistle when it used to be on Saturdays, which used to be sponsored by Lightwater Valley. I found that an odd match.

Off topic but why did nearly all ITV shows in the mid 90s have the sponsors incorporated into the titles. Take This Morning for instance...

Then you also had Blind Date, Talking Telephone Numbers, Surprise Surprise, etc...

News isn't allowed to be sponsored currently, on TV or radio.

Currently, yes. Hopefully never. But parts of the news (weather, pollen count, travel etc) can be - in the regional news these form part of the programme and the stings can be jarring and affect the natural flow of the bulletin.

My comment about the news was in jest, but I wouldn't be surprised if the rules change one day.

In Hong Kong sponsored time checks are possible. In Malaysia and Singapore too.

Is it just me or have nearly all of the popular programmes on ITV/C4/C5 etc. have sponsorship deals with companies. I know they need the money and I cant see anything wrong with the idea but some of them are just awful. The Chase and Gala Bingo and Coronation Street and Compare The Market are my two most disliked. Any stupid ones you have seen before or now?

When I think of Coronation Street sponsorship I would think of those Cadbury sponsorship bumpers followed by a Granada endcap.

It's still Bird's Eye. And that really is the worst I've seen on tv at the moment. Boy with bland smiley face showing teeth constantly, fox tail for some reason, sometimes he sits down but never eats, but sometimes disturbingly he stands outside the kitchen and just stands there, smiling at us. Very bland and irritating

In some countries they would step to one side after a game show round or after chatting to a guest, look the viewer in the eye and tell him or her that Alka Sektzer really was the best thing for a hangover.

On a US radio station i listen to in Houston they do this a lot. The hosts stop being themselves and begin to read an entire promotion out before getting back to the programme or crossing over to travel news etc.

This happens in Talksport football commentaries over here - there'll be a 20-second long promo read out for a sponsor.

Reminds me of the commentary from Jonathan Pearce when San Marino famously scored after 8 seconds in 1993: “Welcome to Bologna on Capital Gold for England versus San Marino with Tennent’s Pilsner, brewed with Czechoslovakian yeast for that extra Pilsner taste - and England are one down!”
