A wonderful theme, but rather than just the theme changing, the whole programme is unrecognisable to the 90's original. The only things the same are the programme title and the fact that somebody is crowned 'master chef' at the end of the series.

With the bake off now on Channel 4, I've been thinking that the current master chef format could lend itself to the baking world, though on second thoughts that programme title would flag up many points of view complaints.

With the return of QI this weekend, it reminded me of this thread and also two notable things about QI:

1) It has had the same title sequence for the entirety of its run, although the closing titles have been truncated in recent years.
2) It has had the same theme tune for the entirety of its run with one or two notable exceptions:
2a) The France episode, which had the tune played on accordions for some reason - no other "themed" episode changed the theme in this way.
2b) The Death episode, marketed as a Hallowee'n special, had "deathly" noises laid over the theme, although the theme itself and the visual titles played out as normal
2c) In a similar vein, the Gothic episode also had howling wolves and a solitary tolling bell.
2d) All Christmas episodes have jingle bells and the melody from the song Jingle Bells laid over the top, although the point at the theme when the jingle bells joins in varies from earlier to later series. Series A-H had it join in midway through the intro, whereas after series J (the episode entitled Jingle Bells) it joins in from the start.

Loose Women a very recent example of a theme tune being replaced with a new theme before reverting back to the previous theme. The very early launch editions 18 years ago had an entirely different theme again.

Also, BBC1's Holiday had several themes, all of them excellent IMO.

ITN News also have had several themes, after the original "Non Stop" was dropped in 1982-ish.

The German one didn't feature an ooom-pah band, and the English one didn't feature a morris dancing version.

Then it changed from a 2x30 minute daytime soap to a 60 minute primetime soap and got a completely different theme tune.

The final Pebble Mill theme was a version of ‘satellite soap’ by Argent and Howes. There was a theme before this, which was basically “doo doo do do do do do do pebble mill at one”

Jackanory ... original tune ( although various arrangements over the years ). Complete with Quentin Blake Cool

Sometimes I think late 70s or very early 80s they got rid of any regular theme tune and each different story started with different music

Finally around 1993, a theme tune or at least an introduction was brought back.

There seems to be a dearth of any 1990s Pebble Mill title sequences online.

I remember a "horizontal blinds" one, and later a "water ripples" one (a literal pebble, dropping into water).

What I presume was the programme's 3rd-and-final 1990s titles sequence, I seldom saw so barely remember. I think it featured a montage of people and things on a sparse white background. Or something.

No, the first episode of Loose Women had the classic theme (although a slightly different version to the one from the 00's).

Have we had The One Show yet:

Why Don’t You? This 1979 version is more interesting for the completely different start and end :

1985 - more a different arrangement of the one above :

1988 - complete change:

1993 :

Why Don’t You ran from 1973 to 1995. Not a bad run.
