Would love to have got my hands on the Monkhouse archive, such a wide-range of rare vintage footage.

Are you watching this programme about it on BBC4? Absolutely incredible what he kept - not just TV/radio programmes and films but things like scripts and every issue of the TV Times annotated with corrected details. He even had all the contestant cards from The Golden Shot.

I just finished watching that documentary, very fascinating stuff indeed, it appeared during the 1990s he taped quite a lot of programmes, but he also had some gems from the 1970s, such as Lenny Henry's first appearance on New Faces. Loved the bit with the amended TV Times listings, it didn't start at 10.50 it was at 10.37...

back on topic what about programmes which were never completed like After Henry or 2.4 children which ended when principal actors died

After Henry had its last series screened after the death of Joan Sanderson, but that series was completed before she died, so how you can claim it was "never completed" I don't know. It is said that had Sanderson not died a 5th TV series was pretty much guaranteed. The radio adaption airs on BBC Radio 7, but the entire TV run is now available on DVD so it's not like it isn't hiding in an archive somewhere.

As for 2.4 Children, it apparently shows up on GOLD on occasion but again, why do you say "never completed"? Gary Olsen died in 2000 and the show only wrapped up after his death but again that was between series.

how do I CLAIM they were never completed Shocked

because I was mistaken, i thought both series were being made when the artists died, Good God is getting something wrong a cardial sin on this forum or what Confused

a simple correction to my error might have sufficed

It was a good programme. Even though it was very interesting, I'd like to see another programme with more clips and less talking heads.

It makes me wonder why we aren't seeing things like The Golden Shot on television or online somewhere. What good is finding all this stuff if it never gets shown to the general public. Presumably the rights holders want some money for it and yet no one is willing to pay [enough].

We've gone from the problem of television companies wiping their archive because they don't realise the value of it to television companies over estimating the value of their archive and being stuck with nowhere to showcase it.

Central's 1982 sitcom Father Charlie, about a Catholic priest, was never repeated as far as I know, neither was LWT's 1981 sitcom Kinvig starring Tony Haygarth and Prunella Gee. I can only vaguely remember Father Charlie now, but at the time I enjoyed both programmes.

I know. It was one of those programmes that caught my eye last year but I don't think I watched it all, will have to try and find it again.

EDIT: Just realised it was on tonight *hits head against wall and heads to iPlayer*

Very enjoyable programme.

I was fortunate enough to attend the screening of the Monkhouse Archive at BAFTA (and you could see the back of my head in the programme, excitingly) and Mike Prince, the ATV/Central continuity announcer, said that Bob would often phone him up with jokes and facts about films and programmes that were coming up so he could use them in his links. And when he was doing The Golden Shot, he sometimes used to come up to Birmingham the night before and sit in with Mike while he did his links, sometimes popping in front of the camera for a quick chat.

Surely they were just recorded as a consequence of recording a programme and were later catalogued seperately by Kaleidoscope? Hence 2 of them are intro's to (presumably his) episodes of Family Fortunes.

Incidently, going back to my post above about the NFTA - their website says:

Since 1st January 1985 we have recorded independent terrestrial channels to broadcast standard, and we currently select about 12.5% of the output of ITV, Channel Four and Five for permanent preservation... The fact that most of our TV collection is acquired by recording off-transmission makes it a unique record of television as it was seen by the audience, including all the material between the programmes - the commercials, trailers, announcements, station identifications etc., constituting an invaluable reference tool for researchers.

I'd never realised that, glad it exists somewhere

Hmm, would he have had a show on after OTT? It played out jolly late.

Perhaps he just recorded OTT.
