Interesting report this from a member of Joe Public who went to a recording. Apparantly they were filming another show for the same series and Anthea Turner went to change into the previous weeks clothes to film the draw. http://www.myledbury.co.uk/lottery/lotterybigticket.asp
I don't know why Mulhern even agreed to be involved, there must have been more than a generous offer from Camelot!
Just watching some In It To Win It on YouTube after the sad news of Dale, and it is amazing how the Lotto gameshow host on the BBC used to have to dress up identical to their pre recorded show on a Saturday night for the live draws, fast forward 10-15 years and now the results are announced on ITV by some random voice clips saying the numbers! (I know they still do the draw machine on YouTube but still!)

Not sure you would get away with that so much these days. In the 90s and 00s so much content was put out as live without most people knowing any different (Talking Telephone Numbers aside!).
Shows like The Big Breakfast would often pre-record interviews. Sometimes the guests would be proclaimed to be "live in the house" when the interview was recorded at some junket in a fake set.
Something that seems to be quite prevalent these days on "live" radio is for links to be recorded while songs are playing, then inserted when the song's finished. I've witnessed this happening at Capital and there seems no apparent reason for it other than to maybe avoid mistakes.

Pre-rec links on Capital are "splits", where each TSA has a bespoke link. They're played out simultaneously.

If they put a caller on asking for a request and they hit the vocals perfectly, you can be pretty sure it's recorded.
Sounds slicker and the punter gets to hear themselves on air.

All the above, and..
(speaking with my radio production hat on)
Unless your station had the luxury of operating with a 4-7 sec delay, putting callers 'to air and unscreened' was highly risky.
For a start, there's no time to EQ the sound level of the phone line. The presenter then has to do some live leveling with the possibility of wild swings in volume and quality, or, the caller is listening to the output on a loud radio and you get a howl of feedback at the start of the call, followed by the dj shouting "Turn your radio down" to the caller. Off to a flying stop. Not great.
Then, its the caller themselves. For some it's OK being putting then on hold, but put them to air, and nerves kick in and the lively and eloquent person you spoke to a minute ago, becomes a giggly monosyllabic wreck...
.. Or they drag out every swear word in the book of 'upheld and in breach' rule breeches of Ofcom.
Additionally, I've known them to either forget the song title completely, ask for a track that had already been played in that hour, or the absolute nightmare, when you ask them "which song?" off air beforehand, they then go and ask for a totally different track once on air.
Pre-recording, pretty much stamps all that out. With a good presenter, the listener won't notice the call was recorded.
