What it's like to be a contestant or participant on a TV show? I started applying to be a contestant on various gameshows in the last year and curious to know what the experience is like if you are lucky enough to be selected.

Possibly driven to it through the monotony of lockdown, I applied online to go on a certain quiz show just over a week ago.

I got a call back from a researcher the day after who asked me about myself and also asked me ten general knowledge questions. I was asked various other things as well, including whether I have a criminal record, whether I’ve been on any other TV shows, whether anyone in my family works for the broadcaster, and whether I’m in a group vulnerable to Covid.

On the basis of my responses, I’ve been asked to audition via video call next week which will be recorded for the producers to watch and decide whether I’ll be invited to take part.

So I’d also be interested to hear any other experiences of appearing on an actual show - particularly what sort of preparation or rehearsal (if any) that contestants get before recording starts. Presumably they do something to get people warmed up and relaxed first?

Wasn't Sub Zero one of those shows that claimed to be completely live but it was painfully obvious that at least one of the segments was pre-recorded? Or was that in the earlier format? I know they mucked about with that in the Robin Banks days and the later format changed somewhat.

Re: Question Time, did you get to ask a serious question or a light-hearted one like what was a politician's favourite type of biscuit?

ISTR the bit half way through with Jemma James going through the people who'd been in touch during the week was recorded. I think that was filmed during the rehearsal on the Saturday or before TX on the Sunday, it was so long ago I can't quite remember. There was a lot of repositioning of cameras needed half way through and I think it made it easier for the gallery team and Floor Manager to coordinate everything.

Another spoiler, the headsets were fake. We had tie clip mic's under the boiler suits.

The question I asked on Question Time was 'Will the cabinet and shadow cabinet reshuffles really make any difference to UK politics, or is it simply just window dressing?' It sparked a good healthy debate between Matthew Parris, Jo Swinson and Diane Abbott in particular (who claimed she was a bit of curtain for the Labour Party!).

Weirdly, I think being stuck indoors and watching too much game shows was what prompted me to apply for these type of shows as well, I wouldn't have dreamt of applying before.

The way I see it, it's a day out and you get your face on the telly!
