Hello all,

Anyone got a rough idea what an average salary is for a TV presenter? Obviously thats a 'how long is a piece of string' type of question and Jonathan Ross will be on a million times more than someone on a shopping channel.

It all stems from a discussion I had debating how much sky sports pundit Chris Kamara might be on for his regular stints on Sky, at first I thought he'd be a millionaire but in retrospect, thats highly unlikely. Does anyone have any ideas what different salaries a TV star can expect to see? Like what would a Blue Peter presenter get, what would some random sky channel presenter get, what would Harry Hill get etc etc etc

cheers

Why is this any of your business?

A lot of smaller channels, like SmileTV etc, work as freelance staff so get the standard freelance rates which is around £900-£1,300 a week. News presenters don't get that much. Do a search on BroadcastNowJobs (www.broadcastnow.co.uk) for job opportunities within presenting, or ask the BBC Freedom of Information department (www.bbc.co.uk/foi) and see if they'll divulge anything.

I'm not asking for an specific persons salary, just an idea for ball park figures.

Why is it any of my business? It isn't, but I am allowed to be interested, would you have abruptly asked 'why is this any of your business?' if I asked 'what is the average earnings of a milkman?

A very odd thing to say, I could understand if he was asking about the salaries of specific presenters, but it's clearly his asking about presenters in general.

I agree - its not as if you are asking about specific people's salaries. When jobs are advertised they always give the salary range, its always interesting to see what certain jobs pay.

It just sounded slightly creepy to me...

I think the likely answer to your question is "nowhere near as much as you'd think".

I'm with Jugalug, it looked pretty damned specific to me.

I think it goes up the longer you stick with a show or a channel, and how essential it is for that presenter to be there. Davina McCall earns over £1m per year for Big Brother and that increases slightly each year, it will have been nowhere near that back in 2000 with BB1. Its the same with Carol Vorderman. I read somewhere that when Countdown started she earned something like £150 a show but by the end it was very close to £1m.

... a year.

I think generally certainly with TV actors it's less than you think - most of the top earners get around £70k to £120k a year. Presenter wise apart from a few at the very top most seem to be paid in hundreds of thousands rather than millions, so I guess for your more basic run of the mill not that famous presenter they're probably on a par with the soap actors at best. I can't see the Blue Peter presenters for example getting more than £100k a year, though as with other shows the longer you're there I'd expect the more you get paid. Konnie probably got alot more in her final year than Helen gets in her first year.
