I was watching TV last night at a friend's house in Snaith, near Selby. Five didn't go off at all, unless they received it via a different transmitter. It was possible to pick up some channels reasonably well via a different transmitter - I assume one that wasn't a dependant of Emley Moor.
How much of YTV land was affected by the outage - was it everywhere served by Emley and its dependents?
Emley's patch is pretty large, all dependents would have been off with the exception of YTV Crosspool which is fed seperately to provide the Calendar South sub-opt (so not a relay on YTV), and I guess any relays which have a backup from Belmont.

I live in Crosspool in North West Sheffield. What on earth do you mean "YTV Crosspool"? I think you're on about The Sheffield Transmitter based on Lydgate Hill on the border of Crosspool and Crookes. It's not big compared to Emley Moor, but still provides very good television signals for Sheffield viewers. This transmitter won't have had any effect from Emely Moor yesterday, because there's a huge satellite dish next to it - it gets its signals from space.
It's not YTV Crosspool - it's YTV South Yorkshire, and allows viewers to receive Calendar South, like you said. It has nothing to do with where the Sheffield Transmitter is based. I've lived in Crosspool all my life - it's a lovely, peaceful suburbian area in Sheffield and has nothing to do with broadcasting. The only reason why the transmitter is there is because Lydgate Hill is the highest point in Sheffield.

Apparently the aerials for Channel 5 are further down the tower, so wouldn't have been afected by lightning that hit the BBC/ITV/CH4/ DTT aerials that are at the top

yeah, that's why some houses in valleys (like mine) can't recieve five through terrestial.

The Sheffield transmitter is also known as Crosspool, regardless of what it might officially be known as now, the terms are used interchangeable.
Until the Calendar South opts started it was a straightforward RBL relay of Emley, but it was given a direct feed of YTV to enable the opt. That was what I was getting at with my reference to "YTV Crosspool" - my understanding was that BBC and C4 were RBL from Emley still, but YTV was line/SHF fed.
The Satellite dish you mention will be for Channel 5, DAB and DTT.

For the last time -it's not called the crosspool transmitter. It's the Sheffield transmitter. Never mind what that Mike whatshisname says, I've lived in Crosspool all my life, and I know this transmitter inside out. Crosspool is a quiet suburbian area which I dearly love, and I think that it's wrong for Crosspool to be talkled about on the world wide web. Please - no more mention of it!
