I see adverts are going out on ITV tonight for a new TV listings magazine launching tomorrow, the Total TV Guide. It looks like this new magazine will be 45p for it's first issue.

Is there really room for another listings magazine ? What with the established TV magazines, and all the ones that fall out of the weekend papers ?

Obviously.

I don't think that this one will survive as we have seen many come and go over the years, though it all went pearshaped, when both TV Times and Radio Times started giving listings for all the channels, which led to more magazines being published, I think when they did this in 1992 (I think) there were tons launched, but out of the one's launched in the early 1990's only TV Quick and What's On TV seemed to have survived, with TV and Satellite Week and TV Choice coming along later and both being successful.

Plus I like TV and Satellite Week as it's front cover is never soaps, something which isn't Soaps for once, and I think RT does it too.

I doubt I will get this new tv guide - I get Inside Soap + whichever of the tv guides has a corrie cover - e.g this week I got TV Choice as it had a nice pic of Lucy Barlow from Corrie on the cover Very Happy

I'll maybe buy the trial price issue to see what it is like. I don't think this one will survive particulalry as its premium priced and as has been said there are loads of alternative TV guide magazines available as well as internet services such as Digiguide.

I too think this is one too many tv guides

we already have all of these which provide listings

TV Times
Radio Times
TV Choice
TV Quick
TV and Satalite
Whats on TV
The TV Mag (The Sun)
We Love Telly (The Mirror)
Inside Soap
Heat

and there are probabaly more too

I've read what presumably is the first issue already, as my dad's work prints it.

From what I saw, it seems very similar to the TV guide that comes free with the Daily Mirror on Saturday- I don't know if they're directly linked but the listings style in terms of graphics and placing of channel listings are very similar. I could be wrong about them being associated, as I'm too lazy to find both magazines and check the printers/publishers/whatever.

Listings-wise, it is rather detailed, and has about six pages for each day. As for "features", its pretty much standard with most TV magazines I've seen- the various choices in the front, with one or two sentences written about the cover story and lots of pictures.

Long story short: alright, although not as good as the Sky EPG.

I'd happily pay £3 for a decent listings magazine will full, proper listings for each channel. Like RT capsules when they only covered BBC 1 and 2.

Unfortunately, I guess hardly anyone else would...

I wouldn't pay £3 but I think there should be a mag that is like a downmarket version of the Radio Times.

i.e features like you get in Whats on TV combined with detailed listings like in the Radio Times. I'd like to see more detailed listings for ITV2 as well, though once you go down that line loads of what could be called the main digital channels would need to be covered and it would take over loads of pages

if only someone would produce a guide like the "TV Guide" in the USA. Easy grid layout with channels on the left hand side, time across the top and you just cross reference, first section for Mainstream Broadcasters then onto premium channels.

The 45p issue is issue 2. Issue 1 was free with Take a Break last Thursday, and will still be on sale until tomorrow.

Using my A-level in maths I can work out that a full listings mag for all the sky channels would require roughly 40 pages for each day.

(Roughly 160 channels divided by 4 channels on a page.)
