..and they had 2's in the background didn't they...odd computer-generated head of Anne though; not scary but still really quite bizarre.

I Posted a similar Topic Last year and the main things that were mentioned were:

BBC2 1979 (Stripey with Fanfare)
One of the first Colour YTV Idents - specifically the purple silhouette that flew off.
Bravo 1990 (Spooky but very good)
BBC2 1991 Shadow
BBC1 Bat Wings (when seen for the first time)

The old HTV Idents (white letter on blue background) does give me the creeps, and I saw it on a laptop in broad daylight!

But I can understand the choice. Compared to the current BBC TWO era I suppose it is quite bold and stark...and compared to the other idents of the time the '2' image does distort in width severely because of the distance the light is shone.

For any particular reason?

I must admit the BBC TWO's "Paint Pot" (a twist on the original "Paint") of 1997 caught me off guard.

I was so used to seeing a '2' in the centre of the screen; that when it was replaced by a Pot I did a double take!

First frame of the ident:

Confused

Bloody good idea though. Don't make 'em like that anymore.

Ahh - Paint Pot! I laughed out loud first time I saw that! Seeing even that first frame of Paint Pot has just reminded me how bloody good those BBC Two idents were - I'm completely sick and tired of yellow and purple. The old series of idents were just wonderful. I still don't understand why they were discontinued.

What - the lightspots?! That's a fantastic ident - though I suppose the fanfare is quite shrill - I never found it anywhere near as scary as the Anglia Knight from the same era ... the closeup of the knight's face during the long ident (often used at startup) is just freaky...

For me though - the scariest ident was the OU ident from the early eighties. Absolutely terrifying, not least because it would often be preceeded by black and silence for an age and then would just appear along with those scary trumpets.
