TV Guide of the Future

Which channels do you think will still be around in 2040?

I can't honestly say that many people from 1990 would have accurately predicted which ITV company would be the sole survivor today that hasn't been taken over or lost at a franchise round.

I don't think many people would have seen Anglia taking over the entire network as actually happened (in a round-about manner).

This is why it's difficult to make predictions on which TV channels will be around and which won't.

It's possible that some minor satellite channels will still be around in 2040 but BBC1 (in something resembling its current form) might not be.

I believe there will be channels named "BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5" but the format will be different and I think it will be down to familliarity. As I said in a earlier post whilst I understand that its the programmes that people watch the actual channels in terms of idents, continuity etc provide a kind of "security blanket".

I can see in 20 years time that free tv will be a a two-tier system with linear stations acting a a "core" with the streaming acting as "supplements"

A couple channels I doubt have a long term future are 4Seven and 5 Select. Arguably they are effectively linear equivalents of their catch-up services, All 4 and My5.

Some of the content on these channels could easily be shown on one of their other existing channels, and also I can't recall seeing either channel's listings in the TV magazine I buy. I wonder if eventually these channels will act as placeholders on the Sky/Virgin/FreeSat EPG for their catch-up channels, and cease being linear TV channels.

4Seven and 5 Select are rather like Groundhog Day.

I feel they will. Being brutally honest the likes 4Seven and 5Select haven't really been suitable as tv channels for a long time. They seem to be linear versions of their streaming services. The likes of "Can't Pay".. and "Come Dine..." are soaking up valuable space on the spectrum and would be far better to be on streaming only.

Well I was thinking because Channel 5's only success was Big Brother and now that's not made anymore I feel like ViacomCBS may just give up on 5 if the ratings drop as more 5 viewers move to the other 4 channels. As 5 is so not as good as BBC 1&2 ITV and C4, 5 may just to in the next 5-10 years because of its poor amount of programming but if ViacomCBS pulls something out that will draw viewers in to watch 5 well that would be a miracle but I don't think that will happen anytime soon. Anyways for some reason I sometimes enjoy C5 programming but usually it's just boring and is just shows that the others don't want that are has and has no purpose to be in this world.
