At the end of Take the High Road (High Road), I found this on the web about the end. Gwyneth Guthrie played Mrs Mac (the village gossip) for 21 years!
Gwyneth Guthrie said: "We have been waiting for this decision for a long time. When we filmed the last episode there was a piece in the script about how a lot of small villages like Glendarroch have suffered because local business has gone to the bigger towns.
Well it's personal opinon but Game On & Father Ted reach no conclusions to me. The story doesn't 'end' with them.
Also the Bewitched thing metioned earlier. I do know everything about it and that was it's reason for ending when it did but they still did never make an 'end' the story for it. They offered Liz an 9th & 10th season but it was turned down.
And OFAH does 'end' in 1996. The ones that followed was like digging up an grave and should'nt have been done.
ri:se, with trisha phoning in p###ed to say how she would rather be in bed with her husband than watching ri:se and the world's biggest people pile consisting of 4 people
On father ted, the ending was supposed to be him jumping out of a window and killing himself, but the actor died after the filming, so they just created a montage of an ending out of respect.
I did my orginal list by the way by going thru my dvd collection. Hence I know X-Files/Seinfeld I havn't got the last episodes yet.
But some shows that'didn't have an ending done. The 'last' episode is just like a standard episode but no more were made after. (i list my dvds alphabeticaly)
Bewitched
The Detectives
Father Ted
Fawlty Towers
Game On
I Dream Of Jeannie
The League Of Gentlemen
Open All Hours
(Porridge) Going Straight
Some Mothers Do Ave Em
Steptoe & Son
(Yes Minister) Yes Prime-Minister
Fawlty Towers - Basil the Rat was a regular episode and ended with Sybil's line "I'm afraid it's started to rain again". But considering that other episodes ended similarly (e.g. Basil screaming at the hotel inspectors) and that the show is really in a constant loop where individual episodes don't link, then I think it's safe to say that this ending was not conclusive.
The League of Gentlemen - the 1st series had Benjamin entering the Local Shop; the 2nd had the Local Shop being burnt down and Tubbs & Edward being supposedly killed in the blaze (Hilary Briss was seen to escape to a tropical island as well); the Christmas special saw Papa Lazarou kidnap the Reverend Bernice; and the 3rd ended individual characters stories, as well as with the birth of Barbara's children who have upturned noses like Tubbs & Edward. The film ends as a dream of one of the writers, Jeremy Dyson, and with everyone having tales - a reference to his idea at the beginning of the film.
Open All Hours - again another regular episode, with Arkwright's engagement to Nurse Gladys Emmanuel remaining seemingly unfulfilled.
Porridge/Going Straight - the former has Godber leaving prison on parole and Fletcher talking to McKay about welcoming a new inmate ("One: bide your time. Two: keep your nose clean. And three: don't let the b*stards grind you down"); the latter has Godber getting married to Fletcher's daughter.
Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister - in the Christmas special, Jim Hacker becomes elected Prime Minister; the latter was again just a regular episode.
