Unless of course you're watching on UKTV G2 in which case, like the other night, they put up a great big "coming up next" picture-in-picture style caption over the final scene Rolling Eyes

Ok, it was just prior to actually "going over the top" but still ruined it.

That's the reason why I haven't watched any UKTV channels for 3 months. In fact, I'd barely watched them since they started using the regular "coming next" straps either. They're treating the viewers as if they're impatient imbeciles who can't use their EPG, have short memories (as, last time I watched, UK Gold were announcing what was up next both on the ident and coming out of the ad breaks), and flip channels at the mere mention of credits. Not that big flashy graphics are going to make someone watch a programme they don't want to anyway.

Crossroads Version 1 - Jill Chance and John Maddingham drive off into the sunset (via Kings Oak of course!!!)

Crossroads Version 2 - Phil is arrested for the murder of his dad

Crossraods Version 3 - it was all a dream of a couple of checkout girls in a supermarket (hence proper ending really is version 2 as version 3 apparently never happened!!!)

If I had the Family Fortunes incorrect sound, I'd play it.

Press release from Carlton TV at the time said - I think to stop annoying the fans of proper Crossroads even further than they possibly could have already done - that only the Carlton series' were part of the dream.

So Jill and John going off to look for their new little hotel in the West is the end.

How about Eldorado's final episode on 9th July 1993 (I can't believe it's been 13 years).

Marcus and Pilar sailed off into the night after Marcus delivered the final line "You can't trust anyone these days" (said to be an attack on BBC1 controller Alan Yentob who axed the show), followed by extended credits and vocals added over the theme tune, sung by Johnny Griggs.

I still have a recording of a Sky News report about a group of protesters that gathered in the rain outside BBC TV Centre to demand that Eldorado was given an 11th hour reprieve!

This is all open to very wide-ended interpretation though, not everybody read that press release and not everybody agreed with it anyway. Therefore I think it would be appropriate to say that in the case of Crossroads, how it ended (as printed above) is up to you.

Couple of other endings:

Home Improvement - Tim quit his Tool Time job, had big discussion about shifting states, dreamt about it, whether it happened or not is left up to the viewer.

Quantum Leap shot itself in the foot with its ending as apparently it tried to force a recommission, failed and the show finished with the statement "Dr. Sam Beckett never returned home". Cue upset people.

Somebody posted about Seinfield which is this one (drag to reveal): ->
The comedy resorted to a courtroom format to review its characters' histories and, in this case, find them guilty of doing "nothing" and give them a bit of a comeuppance. While half the western world tuned in, the overblown, meandering episode was no fitting end for a show known for sharp writing. Spare us from all series-finale meetings that start with, "Wouldn't it be cool if they were put on trial?"
<-

Also, Fawlty Towers didn't have a "proper" ending as such, BUT one could actually argue that it was the episode Basil The Rat which ended Fawlty Towers the business, as the public health inspector saw the rat in the biscuit box (enough to have the business shut down as Bail kept pointing out to Manuel?) and Basil being dragged out at the very end.

True, but I'll stick to the official Carlton opinion. The only time I've agreed with Carlton actually. The one thing they did get right in their nine years of trash television.

I thought Father Ted did have an ending with Ted going off to some parish in the middle of a war zone or something!

I know the actor died before the final series was transmitted, but IIRC it was planned to be the final series anyhow.

The ending was actually changed in light of Dermot Morgan's death.

In the final episode, Ted was offered what he thought was a glittering job as a Priest in America, however as he was waiting for the plane to take off, he found out he was being sent to a troubled area, rife with gang warfare and regular drive-by shootings. Consequently he got off the plane and was reunited with Dougal who told Ted that he'd be living on Craggy Island "For ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever...."

At this point, we were then supposed to return to the ledge of a building where earlier in the episode Ted talked a suicidal priest out of jumping. Instead, however this time it's Ted who plans on jumping.

As this was considered inappropriate in the light of Dermot's death, we got to see a montage of Ted's best bits from the three series accompanied by an extended version of the theme tune, which in the circumstances was quite poignant.

I did my orginal list by the way by going thru my dvd collection. Hence I know X-Files/Seinfeld I havn't got the last episodes yet.

But some shows that'didn't have an ending done. The 'last' episode is just like a standard episode but no more were made after. (i list my dvds alphabeticaly)

Game On

I'm sure Game On did have a proper ending. It was the one where Mandy got married, and Matthew finally overcame his fear of going outside to attend the wedding.

I could have sworn in the final Home Improvement Al got married and the Taylor family literally moved house. They put the house on a massive truck and moved.

Also I liked the final edition of Noel's House Party when he woke up on the set of Swap Shop and it was all a dream.

I thought Noel's final words were along the lines of 'After 169 (shows), Goodbye!', roll credits.

I don't remember the Swap Shop bit!

It was right at the very end after Freddie Starr gunged him.
