And then there was that Red Dwarf/Coronation Street crossover...

Let's pretend that never happened.

Though it wasn't really a crossover as such, as it still treated Corrie as a fictional TV show and they were on the set.

Going back to one of the other crossovers I mentioned it this thread.

It was Tanya Turner from Footballers Wives who then appeared in Bad Girls but I can't remember the storyline/plot.

She was convicted of cocaine possession in Footballers Wives and turned up as an prisoner on Bad Girls.

AISTR both programmes were made by Shed Productions.

It probably should never have happened. Matt Groening was so disgusted he had his credit removed from the episode!

Was it that bad?

Well, it wasn't so much that it was bad, but I think the Critic crossover was something that was foisted upon the show by Fox, and he was unimpressed by being co-opted into its marketing.

However, it is one of my least favourite episodes, not for that reason but because it's a really terrible plot and story. It's all based around Barney making a film about alcoholism and Homer being pressurised to choose it as the best in the Springfield Film Festival he's judging, but a) who cares if it wins, it still got made, b) Barney has never before or since shown any kind of self-awareness about his alcoholism (I know he later got sober, but the point remains) and c) in every other episode everyone hates Barney apart from his mate Homer, and now suddenly everyone loves him and Homer's the bad guy! Useless episode.

I believe this debacle was referenced later with Jay Sherman appearing in the Calmwood Mental Hospital as a patient.

When I first saw that I thought it was just a callback to that earlier Simpsons episode, not knowing at the time The Critic was its own show.

Was The Critic even shown over here? If it was I imagine it was only on a channel like Sky One or Paramount Comedy that the vast majority of people wouldn't have access too, so wouldn't be familiar with it.

Remember for the first 7 series of The simpsons you needed Sky to watch it. It so weird to think something so big was only viewed so so little people.

Yes, I think the show sold (or rented) a lot of videos in the early years. Maybe the money they made from them was partly why it took so long to turn up on terrestrial?
