Look I have only ONE username registered with TV Forum: Tumble Tower . I voted ONCE - my vote was YES. Evidently three other users said YES too.

Well why should it not? There are some posts about TV channel codes on the CBeebies presentation thread as well; I asked one of the mods to move those posts across to here and they haven't been moved yet.

TV Fetish, take a look back at the post I made yesterday evening - the one with the TV channel test on it (list of clues) - please post a list of what YOU would call the said channels.

OK folks, just for fun here's a little test for you all to try if you wish.

What would you (whether in conversation, email, forums, writing) call each of the following TV channels available in the UK?

a) The UK's first ever TV channel which launched in 1936, and after a break for World War II relaunched in 1946.

b) The UK's first commercial service, which up until the nineties was better known among society by regional names, e.g. Westward, Anglia etc.

c) The BBC's second channel which launched in 1964, and pioneered colour in 1967.

d) The fourth TV channel which launched in 1982 to all parts of the UK other than Wales.

e) Sky's main entertainment channel, originally known as Sky Channel.

f) Sky's round-the-clock news channel.

g) The UKTV entertainment channel which launched late 1992, to show old BBC and Thames programmes.

h) The fifth and final analogue terrestrial channel.

i) The BBC's round-the-clock news channel.

j) ITV's second channel which launched in 1998.

k) The UKTV channel which focuses on food and cookery.

l) The UKTV lifestyle channel.

m) The BBC's channel for children aged 6-13.

n) The BBC's channel for pre-school children.

o) The popular shopping channel which is available on Freeview channel 16 or Sky channel 630.

p) The BBC's third entertainment channel which launched in 2003 to replace BBC Choice.

q) The BBC's arts and culture channel which replaced BBC Knowledge in 2002.

r) The history channel run by UKTV, available on Freeview as well as Sky.

s) A channel run by Virgin which is available on Sky, it shows repeats of old quiz / game shows.

But what do YOU call them?

  1. BBC1
  2. ITV1 (why the lady luck is this where BBC2 should be?)
  3. BBC2
  4. Channel 4 / C4
  5. Sky One (why is it where Channel 5 should be?)
  6. Sky News (Sky's alarmingly rubbish news channel)
  7. UK Gold
  8. Channel 5
  9. BBC News 24
  10. ITV2 (fluff)
  11. UK Food
  12. UK Style
  13. CBBC (timeshares with BBC3)
  14. CBeebies (timeshares with BBC4)
  15. QVC
  16. BBC3 (timeshares with CBBC)
  17. BBC4 (timeshares with CBeebies)
  18. UK History
  19. Challenge TV

Tell me what is wrong with the original names, and with actually arranging the channels in the right order? PLEASE?

I think you have mistaken a quiz for a copy of the Radio Times.

Here is another quiz.

1. What was the first programme to be shown on ITV2?
2. Which famous battle happened in 1066?
3. Who was the first man to walk on the moon?

Someone that mistakes this quiz for a history book might say the following

"It's lucky that the start of ITV2 wasn't delayed by The Battle of Hastings because it meant they could show Coronation Street while ITV1 were showing live pictures of Neil Armstrong walking around on the moon."

Do you understand where you went wrong now?

Just like my quiz wasn't in chronological order, Tumble Tower's quiz wasn't in the order you might find the channels on your EPG.

I put it to you on the previous page that your attempts at re-inventing the wheel have fallen on deaf ears, but you have plainly decided to ignore me.

In conclusion: you are either a troll of the worst order or you have a bad case of OCD.

Diplomacy is wasted on you, so don't expect anything other than my heart-felt contempt from now on.

Weirdo.

Well this was a quiz, so I deliberately listed the clues to the channels in a jumbled order. You'll find that on both Freeview and Sky, the first five channels are BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and Five. After that it's ITV2 on Freeview or Sky One on Sky.

You may have spotted that the first ten channels are listed in the order in which they launched.

As for "what's wrong with the names?", well some are a bit of a mouthful. Look at BBC News 24, is it not easier to say B7? Likewise isn't B8 easier to say than BBC Parliament? Surely it's easier to say US instead of UKTV Style or UB instead of UKTV Bright Ideas, is it not? What about texting on a mobile? Isn't it easier and quicker to text UB instead of UKTV Bright Ideas?

I don't text channel names, and when I do I leave plenty of space for the channel name.

I find it perfectly easy to say "UKTV Style" and "BBC News 24" because I don't have to translate them in my head. Which I do have to do if I'm told about a programme on "B6". I have to arrange a list of the channels, arrange them in EPG order, swap two of them around, then translate them into your stupid codes, and then finally pick the required channel from the list.

You'd be better off just saying the channel name in French.
